I hav just bought one of these Linksys compact jobbies

Do I also need to purchase a modem as well and if so what type, or does it just plug into the telephone socket and do it's business?

Yes, you'll need a modem that outputs an RJ-45 ethernet WAN. Which in this country, is a pain in the harris. A telewest/NTL cable modem will be fine but to go into an ADSL line, you may have problems.

Yes, it would. It can be confusing though. If you're going to do p2p or gaming and you need to forward ports, you may find you'll have to forward them on both devices. You'll probably also be 'double-NATing'. It won't make a lot of difference except make things a bit confusing when you're setting it all up as you'll have an outside IP address, an inside and then another inside one from the linksys.

yes. The bit you are looking for is 'with built in ADSL modem' or check to see if it has an RJ-11 connector on it.
