Wireless connection

Yes, yes, thank you Mr 1st line technical support :p

The documentation was effectively one line saying - stick cd in - go to router, give it your ISP name and log in.

*sigh* Is there any documentation on the cd...

And now I've tried adding the same information in the laptop connection that it has on the router.

What a bag of shite  ALL router manufacturers just made the list.

shit i did not mean suing, i meant using!

Thanks for the pointer - but I would rather get the built in system working rather than adding an extra layer of complexity.

Oh for pity's sake... this is far more complicated than it has any need to be. I 'enabled' WPA which now means that I can see the network and connect to it from the laptop but not actually use it... great.

What do you mean by not use it...? Also, be specific in what you say, it will save time. Basically, what you have to do is set a password on the router and then set a password on the laptop when you connect. Personally I use WEP as it seems less fiddly to set up.

So when you enabled WPA, did it ask you to provide a key?

If so, you should only need to browse to the network using XP's "Find available wireless networks" function and then when you try to connect, you should be prompted to enter the key (which you've decided up on earlier and told the router).

If it's not doing that, it's probably not completely configured.

Have you gone into the WPA/PSK option under the WLAN settings and specified a key?

OK.

I have two lots of settings that seem likely (there is about 40 different menus possible)

One is Wireless Configuration

(Titles in bold - options if drop downs in normal)

SSID
Channel
Security Enable Encryption/Disable Encryption
Key Length 64 bit 128 bit
Auth Type Open System Shared Key Both

(The Passphrase should be fewer than 16 characters. You may manually enter you HEX key below and leave Passphrase blank)

Passphrase
Key 0
Key 1
Key 2
Key 3
Secret AP Disable Enable (Hide SSID)

The other possible menu is Security Settings/WAN Security:

WPA Mode Disable Enable
Network Authentication WPA RADIUS/WPA Pre-Shared Key
Data Encryption TKIP
WPA Pre-Shared Key
WPA Group Rekey Interval seconds
RADIUS Server Address
RADIUS Server Port
RADIUS Shared Secret

I'm guessing this:

WPA Pre-Shared Key {stick yer key in here?}

RADIUS Shared Secret

Is what you're after.

Suggestions in bold italics...

Basically, what you want to do is give the router a passphrase on this screen. Note down the hex values it gives and choose the first key. Go to your laptop and attempt to connect to your wireless network. Windows will ask for a key. Enter the long hex value (twice). Note down any error message in full and post them here.
