Wirefresh! Interested in writing for a new tech website?

I'd be up for this. I am constantly moaning about the way tutorials are written for people who know what they're doing (Linux ones are terrible for this).

So maybe a section where a complete noob wrote about what they were gonna attempt and then have people advise the best way forward and others ask their questions and eventually it could turn into a place where you could ask the questions you'd feel far too embarrassed to ask on techie forums. And then a tut could be worked up from it.

This is exactly the sort of thing i was going to suggest. Maybe also product reviews from the point of view of someone new to the technology, rather than full of technical jargon that only experts can understand.

Also, while i recognize that our electronically-connected world reduces distances and gives all of us access to the same information, i'm happy to offer my services from over here in the US. I'm not sure that my location will give me any special insight into what's happening over here, but i might keep track of different stories that you flks in the UK, and the way that tech issues are handled here is sometimes different.

An area i'm particularly interested in is intellectual property, copyright, and fair use in the internet age, as well as the intersection of technology and the law. I'm not a lawyer, nor even a legal expert, but this is an area where i do a fair bit of reading and might be able to make a contribution.

humm well i do have some articles i wrote for my students... they are written as a quick over view of some topics in computing

however they are just really me re echoing stuff i lernt in uni with a bit of wiki revising probably not really good enough

a selection of lies to dole students

I should know what's happening by Friday this week - we'll either be taking over an existing (but struggling) tech website and renaming/rebranding it, or we'll start a fresh site.

Still going with wirefresh.com which - if I say so myself - is a pretty good domain name to get these days. Tech75 has gone sadly - one of the zillions of domain names lying unused in the hope of the owner being able to flog it off.

Heh yeah that is a pretty decent name.
To be honest, the fact that I managed to bag a decent name has spurred me on to do this.

I used to feel a right plonker at product launches introducing myself as a writer for 'digital hyphen lifestyles dot info'. Dot info for fuck's sake!

I write for a living on enterprise storage. I'd do stuff on consumer/small office storage if that was something that fitted your plans

That's just fucking humiliating.
I could see their faces dropping a little when I reached the hyphen part, but when I finished off with a 'dot info' I may as well had a neon sign lighting up above my head saying 'loser.'

I begged the owner to change the name and even sent him a long list of better alternatives.

Have been an IT pro for 10 years, a gamer for 25 and a nerd for nearly as long.

Would also be happy to contribute if you want some filler stuff.

:)

Cheers for the positive feedback y'all.

I'll have some idea of a timescale for getting the thing off the ground by Monday, I hope.

Coulda been worse. At least it wasn't .me.uk :D

I managed to bag a very short, appropriate-to-my needs .com recently. It's bloody great when you're giving out your email addy over the phone. Finally... no need to repeat each letter, explain what a hyphen is, and where to put the sodding dot.

LOL! Fair point, shame that never got anywhere it was a good site...

If you ever need anyone to do financial IT let me know....or at least write something about banking IT and how fucked up it all is. Would have to be anonymous though just to avoid any...errr...'issues' ;)

Im pretty techy when it comes to high end digital camera's, lighting, workflow and photoediting if thats any help

I've probably still got enough tech chops to be able to write some stuff about it, and I quite like writing anyway...

And, having been out of the industry for a while, I may even be able to offer a slightly different perspective on things.

I'm up for the odd article/review from a 'father of two-trainee teaching assistant-masters student in creative writing and a bit disabled' point of view

I'm up for proofing and editing too if that'll help.

I think wire-hyphen-fresh will be a resounding success!

at this rate there will be more writers than readers :)
True, although the way these things usually go, the number of people who express interest in contributing is likely to be quite a lot higher than the number of people who actually produce something for publication.

And i'm not just blaming other people here; i've been guilty in the past of volunteering for stuff and then letting it slide. My post in this thread should be taken as an expression of interest, but not a firm commitment, because i have a bunch of other stuff on my plate right now. I'm sure the editor understands that this might be the case for some people. :)

i'm up for this...my interests - macs/netbooks loaded with osx/cameras for the numpty photographer..like the lumix lx3/palm phones/iphones/smartphones/cykey and other weird keyboards/software that makes you hallucinate..does it work?/tomtoms for the professional explorer who gets lost on the way to the bathroom/anything shiny and small and massively overpriced

With so many people expressing an interest, I'm beginning to feel the pressure a bit now!

I should be able to start getting things underway on Monday, so stay tuned!

By the way, if anyone's looking to get a bit serious about this writing lark, I can thoroughly recommend these two excellent books:

Writing For Journalists (avail s/hand for under a fiver) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Writing-Journalists-Sally-Adams/dp/0415184452
English for Journalists http://www.amazon.co.uk/English-Journalists-Media-Skills-Wynford/dp/0415404207/ref=pd_sim_b_1

I really wouldn't worry about that. I'm involved in a multi author blog and it ensures that there's a steady flow of content without there being too much pressure on any one person to contribute. ;)

There's going be users comments too, so people can contribute by adding something there if they don't fancy writing an entire article.

I can join in/help.... I can also offer hosting at cost if need be, I've started doing reseller hosting with one of my businesses...

I've also just got a job with the Symbian Foundation so have to focus heavily on the mobile market from now on.

I'd be keen to look at the business side of tech things....

Just an update: I'm still hell bent on getting this site going but it's going to take a little while

I was hoping to take over an old (and now defunct) tech site I was involved in and use that as a way to get the new site up and running, but the owner has some truly bizarre notions of its worth, so I'll be starting from scratch instead.
