Winter Olympics.

Men's snowboarding finals is on now. Absolutely spectacular. I think there's a lot to be said for the more explanatory tone of the commentary as well - I'm learning a lot about something which I used to just gawp at.

Luge at the moment.

Seinfeld famously said that it the only sport in the world that someone could win a gold medal without even wanting to take part - Involuntary Luge!

God yeah. I mean that bloke's not really to my taste but at least he knows what he's talking about. I was watching some ski jumping yesterday and the commentator's sole contribution (well, almost) was to say things like "he'll be pleased with that" and "he'll be hoping to better his jump from the first round" (no, really?). You did get the feeling that if you were watching in Finland, say, there'd be slightly more technical discussion...

The paralympics starts a month later.

On last weekend's ski sunday they did a feature on a form of diasbled hockey that was new to me. You sit on a skate and have 2 sticks. Looked well hard. :)

There's a young welsh guy who's in the team for that. he lost his legs when he fell under a train playing as a kid. He's a bit of a celeb in Wales and is on TV all the time. Its called sledge hockey and looks well good, don't see why able bodied peeps couldn't play it too.

They have mountain biking in the summer olympics now, which is

Other than that winter olympics is just so much better.

and our boy liam should still be in great shape by then with any luck!

watched sum of the downhill skiing today which looked ace. My cousin managed to get his girlfriend on an old olympic run went he was skiing over the new year, he took the wrong turn! She a very nervous skiier too, eek!

i have a soft spot for, dare i say it, curling, looks like a great bit of fun to pass away a afternoon.

im looking forward to vancouver 2010 as was up in whistler where lots of the events will take place so will be cool to see it all happen their.

I've been watching the speed skating and loved it. Wasn't so keen on the ice hockey though.

What the fuck is curling about? It looks like they're cleaning the ice! I listened to the bit where they explained the rules and still didn't get it!

Can somebody please explain to me when the rule came in that made it compulsory to have a Jimmy Hill beard in order to compete in the Winter Olympics!

Yeah - it cool.

It gives ya a chance to see some sports you didn't even know existed and gives you something to cheer about.

I love the olympics - we just leave the tv on all day and drift in and out.

I love the Olympics - Summer and Winter, all those sports you never see. We particularly like the Winter games as the snowy conditions are always evocative. :) :) :)

Anyone else watch the pairs skating this evening? It was mental. A Chinese woman competitor took such a terrible fall, it made me feel quite sick, then just re-started the programme, going on to take the silver medal.
Such incredible courage.

can't believe she was able to stand up after that let alone keep doing all the hard jumps and stuff

Don't think she'll be able to stand up this morning - that fall was horrendous :(

Was amazed she was able to carry on, guess the adrenalin was pumping?

Incredable wasn't it.
The snowboard cross on Thursday is definatly worth a watch too - it can get pretty mental.

A word on the coverage: The half pipe commentary was, as pointed out, supurb. (Ed Leigh, btw]

On the other hand, the studio comments from Barker & that skiing woman were some of the most patronising I've ever heard - along the lines of "bless - little teenagers in baggy trousers - Anyway, back to the proper stuff"
:(

What about the mens' doubles luge last night then?
Another absolutely mental sport. I kept thinking who in the hell would volunteer to post themselves down a slide, at 75 miles per hour, with someone else laying down on top of them?
Absolutely mental. The crashes were just too much!

You've got to have either total trust or no imagination.

The snowboarding cross was good, and the women's skeleton is on later.

Sam Sullivan, the mayor of Vancouver, just accepted the Olympic flag.

Because he's a quadriplegic, he had to get a special attachment for his wheelchair to allow him to carry it and wave it.

Then Avril Lavigne sang, while a bunch of Cirque du Soleil students built an inukshuk.

This is a good country.

We're watching it later, when everyone is home.

Sweden and Finland - excellent matchup for the hockey.

Good luck with the 2010 Olympics!!!

Was thinking of it - hubby has friends out there. Visited a while back for the first time. Really loved it. Can't wait to see the opening ceremonies - bet there's gonna be totem poles and canoes.
