wine in laptop disaster

I spilled white wine on my laptop a few days ago - tipped it upside down and let it dry and it seems to be fine now. But, my s key has stopped working. Anyone have a suggestion for what I can do?

The first thing to do when liquid meets electronics is to remove the power supplies (the mains lead AND the battery) as swiftly as possible, and turn the thing upside down so the majority of the liquid exits the same way it went in.

Rip the power lead out and eject the battery, then shake the laptop vigorously upside down. REMOVE THE HARD DRIVE TO PRESERVE YOUR DATA TOO!!!

Don't use salt to soak up moisture, it will rot your circuits!!

If you (like me!) enjoy a glass of wine or a beer or coffee whilst surfing, one of these is well worth the money... £25 from office supply stores.

We always, always use risers, I often use my laptop with a monitor and a roll -up drink proof keyboard. Seems to work as I haven't had any disasters yet, plus the laptop will last much, much longer as well. I can't afford any disasters.

When I work in China I notice that everyone gets these plastic covers made for their laptop keyboards, it's like a clear peace of plastic that has been vac formed to fit exactly. I don't know why we don't use that kind of thing here.

They love stuff like that over there, when you go to someones house the entire place has some kind of covering on every surface in order to protect it. They have them for the coffee table, dvd player, everything.

Really it's just don't have a laptop - wasn't particularly alcohol-related. I'm sure tea would be pretty bad for the thing too. I suppose I could buy a non-laptop computer.

If it never leaves the house, this makes sense, you get better value for money, if you spill wine on the keyboard it doesn't kill the computer and you get a nice large screen.

Hope it doesn't come to that and it all works for you when dried up!
