Windows Vista bastard license restrictions!

AFAIK, the way that WGA works at the moment is that it identifies the serial number of your hard drive, your video card, your logic board and a few other key components. You can change two of them without it bothering you, but when you change a third, it will require re-authentication.

however, thinking about it another way how else would M$ beable to licence really? at what point does the pc become a new machine???? working parts which are replaced with newer better parts as they wear out or are upgraded etc when is that no longer the machine which it was licenced too???

But licensing should work on a concurrent installation/usage basis rather than being tied down to a specific machine.

You should always have the right to uninstall something from a PC and reinstall it elsewhere.

No other software vendor would get away with it - imagine buying photoshop or BattleField 1942 or AutoCAD and having it irrevocably licensed to a specific piece of hardware..........it would never wash.

Yeah I run an 'evaluation' copy of XP and have every confidence that I will have an 'eval' copy of Vista when the time comes :D

that's a different arguement though really...

evewry since M$ went to a per processor licencing model we have been stuck with this idea...

I agree if you buy the software then yes it should be the case mut most people don't 'buy' the software it comes as an OME when they buy the machine... M$ have realised that people were using more than one machine to run xp than was reasonable to do so and some people didn't pay for it at all, infact billy boy even admitted intially he wanted people to steal his software etc etc and he'd claim it back in (about 10 years time) which he can now do as people are all locked into the manner windows does things...

the basic problem is that until summit comes along which is a windows beater or a windows eatter then they will be able to throw their weight around like the biggest dick on the block... the thing which has sold windows has been that most people of even a low level can work it out... (even if some of us would point out it's going from london to brighton via moscow to do it...)

Yeah, sure, probably most home users won't notice, just like they don't notice that they're getting ripped off for an OEM copy of XP nowadays if they buy a new machine when they've already got one. Building your own machine is more popular now, though, and businesses will certainly notice I reckon.

businesses will likely as not go for the corp liencening model if indeed they adopt at all... which is unlikely no one here where i work will be they haven't gone from 2000 except for a few sharepoint cal machines...

In the past i think the rule of thumb is that a motherboard change = new computer. As far as parts goes it's the most central (and the most trouble to change out too). The current need to reactivate windows has pissed me off so much that despite having a legit code per machine i use an "evaluation" copy instead just to avoid the stupidity.

I'm not getting vista if i can avoid it. Linux and OSX for HDCP.

actually, my next computer will probably be a mac, so it's all a bit academic really :)

Don't woory. I'm sure there's some 10 yr old whizz kid out there who will make MS look stupid again.
They haven't failed us yet these hackers have they!;)

Have faith.

i'm waiting for a phreaking collective (not a hacking collective) to provide a totally hacked and usable version of M$ everthing which is supported with all the latest patches etc as they come out in order to totally bankrupt M$ once and for all... think about it M$ updates whcih work... it can't be that mcuh longer before the source code finally comes out on to the net...

I wish I'd got that iMac instead of a PC now. All to save a couple of hundred quid... bah.

Nice machines too. We just had one of the jaw-droppingly bright 24inchers delivered to the office today. Very very nice indeed, with a core 2 duo chip and more than powerful enough for all but the most obsessed of power users.

I've gotten myself a second product key for Windows Vista beta, just to cover my arse like.

I'm hoping this will work with the Vista release version.

Anyone wanting a product key can get one here (eta: it's free)

Nice for you, not an option for gamers :(

I run linux, and hence just puzzle at the MS shenanigans. You have a good point about games, as linux isn't much good for cutting edge games, but there are good games consoles out there, and i can sprawl on the sofa when i play 'em.

(which I'm hoping is good for the gold release).
Don't think it is :( I'm sure I read that during the sign-up process for RC1.

BTW any news on the reappearence of RC2 ?

Oh fuck are you sure? Why would any sane person want to install an (even more) buggy version of their s/w unless there's something in it for them

Hmm I found this:

Upgrade limitations
You may not be able to upgrade your installation of Windows Vista RC1 to the final, commercially available edition of Windows Vista. To upgrade, you will need to acquire the final edition of Windows Vista and you may have to do a clean installation.

It doesn't explicitly say this means the RC license # won't work. What do peeps think?

Businesses will have to upgrade to Vista....eventually...we all know that. SOME businesses, including large corporates will make the upgrade at the back end of next year.

Why?

Because it is actually possible to make a business case for it.

Once a business case is made for it, then its up to management to finally decide if that business case is really worth what IT says its worth.

For instance, an IT dept could argue that it saves 160 hours of man time per employee per year. Management could argue.....yeah but we employ the useless cunts anyway....costs stay the same even if time is saved....bankrupt way of thinking but you wait until you work for a corporate that has a spending freeze because of a merger....

OK...not an option for hardcore gamers who wont bat an eyelid at spending £1500 on their rig.
