Windows Geninue Advantage Attacks preinstalled machines

I had problems with all of this shite, in the end i had to get hold of another copy of XP and disable automatic updates to keep the NAG Screens and other invasive microsoft stuff out of my machine, if Mr Gates manages to get into my PC I will simply get hold of another copy of XP, I win Bill you greedy bastard

This would be suicide for MS... Not everyone knows what "security updates" are and why they should be installed...
those who havent' updated won't be affected... equally neither will corp copies or distros... to much trouble coupled with the issues with proctor and gamble and the us military ... however i expect that this will happen just after the release of vista and then of course it'll be sorry we don't stock that software you'll have to upgrade to vista/longhorn etc oh you lost data didn't you read the we are not responsile for anything we make clause in the Eula which we can change at any time with out notice... yadda yadda...

ABM will soon have more and more justification ....

This where I've got logically confused...why would it be?

All they would be doing is disabling a non-revenue source of Windows users...and those that hadn't got everything organised would phoooooooone_hoooooooome and Microsoft would get an update on valid users to add to their growing knowledge base(sic) of who should have Windows..and who shouldn't.

Sounds like good business practice to meh.:(

eta posted over garf...whose looking at it the same methunx.

Two things

1) False positives: if enough properly-licensed users of Windows have problems when their installations are incorrectly identified as illegal, they may consider moving to other products.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06/30/microsoft_wga_snafu/

We went through this in the 1980s with the proliferation of dongles for games and music sequencing software. The markets eventually forced companies to abandon them.

2) There's a fairly well constructed argument that piracy actually acts in Microsoft's favour by establishing and entrenching their software in the minds of computer users.

The spread of their products through low- or no-cost piracy channels turns them into a de-facto standard, reducing the opportunity for other software to compete. With a vast pool of knowledge and 'network effect' of use established through pirated software, legitimate users who do pay up will pile in and buy.

Bill Gates himself admitted as much in an interview with Fortune magazine in 1998.

And as long as they're going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade

Exactly how conscious a policy this was/is at Microsoft is open to debate. Some critics have even gone as far as to suggest that MS made their products deliberately easy to copy in the 1980s and 90s as part of a longer term strategy. What is undeniable is that the widespread unauthorised copying of Microsoft products has played a significant part in their popularity.

WGA is Microsoft's way of 'collecting' quite neatly in the ten year time frame mentioned by Gates... ;)

my mum has been using pc's to email and surf the web for about 4 years at most. she is not an advanced user by any stretch of the imagination.
She uses Ubuntu on her personal laptopn. Is very impressed with it and complains about how shit the pc's they give her at work are.
Using linux is not Willy Waving, it's fiscal common sense. But if you enjoy having to pay £30 a year for AV, £100 extra on your PC to use an OS that criminalises you to use it, £300 for an office package, and so on... thats down to you.
Just don't knock the rest of us that are smug.

:)
The problem isn't the smugness of linux users, it's the fucking tedious way they pop up with regularity in threads relating to windows issues, shouting "you wouldn't have this problem if you used linux". It's worse than cuntish born-again xtians for fuck's sake.

I'm sure linux is a great OS, but it's of no fucking use to me. There's far too much that I actually need windows for that linux simply can't achieve for me currently. Also, there's only so many hours in the day. Installing and becoming familiar with a new OS is a learning curve. I don't really want to piss away any more of my life in front of a computer screen than I do already, so linux ain't on the horizon for me.

So yeah..... I'm sure linux is great. If it does what you want/need and you have the time to familiarise yourself with it, then great. No problem. But please stop evangelising the rest of us!

Oh...? I'm not aware that this happens that often. Can you provide some links if its so common...?

Yeah, sure. I'd be happy to waste my life away by trawling through threads, searching for examples, just so I can occupy the high ground in a forum discussion.

I'll take that as a "no", then, Mr Angry...?

I'll save you the bother of getting links. I know I do this on occasion mostly because I'm bowled over by Linux when compared to Windows and feel that for me (even though I'm an appliance operator) it is a better and less clunky and more transparent system. To me it has all the atributes off an SIII Land Rover it does what it says on the tin.

I apreciate that there are things that Win will do that Linux will not and that some people have software that will run on nothing but Win. However, my personal experience with windows has not been a very happy one and I'm glad I changed over.

If I come over a bit evangalistic about linux then thats because I am having struggled for years with various windows fuckups and security problems and spyware the green fields and user friendliness (once you get it going that is :D ) that I get from linux allows me to concentrate on what I'm doing rather than what has gone wrong.

why you and you cock wit friends seem to need to insessentaly badger people about your geekware systems is beyond me and it's more tiedious than pop ups, music on flash websites or those inarticualte twats who keep evangilising me to use firefox...

so here's the thing ...

IF YOU DON'T USE WINDOWS THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR YOU AND CONTAINS NOTHING OF INTEREST TO YOU UNLESS LIKE JAED AND KEYBOARD JOCKEY YOUR PENIS'S ARE SO SMALL THAT YOU FEEL THE NEED TO COMPENSATE BY WAFFLING ON ABOUT COMPUTERS AND THEIR SUPERIORTY...

Don't mistake humorous venting for anger. Life's too short to care deeply about this shit, y'know. Oh, but you got the "no" right. :D

I agree with much of what you say. I can see the benefits of linux, but it just doesn't provide the functionality I need in its present incarnation. And even if it did, the time I'd need to spend sourcing all the different apps to replace my existing apps and then getting them configured and customised.... sorry, just ain't worth it. And I've nothing against people singing the praises of linux.... it just bugs be a bit when it happens in threads where people basically need advice about their windows installations rather than hard-selling of another OS.

Oh ffs. Do we actually need an explicit "no irrelevant OS evangelism" rule, or is it possible that people can not be knobs? This is clearly a thread offering advice on a specific topic of Windows to Windows users.

nah dear it's where you bugger off the thread unless you have anything which is of relevance to say about the issue you derailing teidous continually having to spout on and on about eithe sodding mac's (of which i have two thanks) or linux(runs my server and one other pc very well thanks) instead of jsut letting windows users have access to informaiton which might help them you utter cretin...

I am interested in this thread. I have a new dell laptop and wonder if this problem would effect me? I can't really see how, I paid my money, the thing works. That said, if the posts on here had any coherence I might be better able to understand.

Can anyone with reasonable syntax summerise please?:)
