I know exactly what you need to do to keep your Windows updated, wishface.

I'm not going to tell you, though, for the simple reason that I think you're a cunt. :)
That must apply to a *lot* of folks reading this thread! :D

It's a fucking message forum, get over it. That's it; just a simple little internet forum.

Ubuntu ?

Do you need a licence with that ?? What's a root ?

Licenses are really hard to get. You need to go the Post Office and fill in a massive form. You get special badge though... :D

(I recommend wikipedia for quicker reading on all of those..)

THat's gnu too isn't....

Ooh, I've been patronised byBoris Sprinkler! I've arrived! "Join us" FFS. Use the fucking OS that suits - for many that is Windows, for others it's not. Grow up, kid, and recognise that no OS is maintenance-free and not everyone wants to fanny around. XP and OS X are both fucking ideal for the home user - they are mature and capable and familiar and make working a PC easy for someone who is just wanting to send a few emails, surf a bit or plug in a new printer or whatever else they've picked up at PC World. Hey, since you are such a big geek why the fuck are you recommending Ubuntu - surely you should be running Solaris, a BSD, plan9 or a virtualised z/os box you fucking cock.

Looks like the "Wishface" disease is spreading...! :D

That says it all really :D

Yeah, I know, but that is the sort of place the vast majority of people pick up stuff for their PCs, and the vast majority want to use a machine that looks like the one that they have at work. It's not an ideal situation, but that's where we are.

:D. Seriously though I'm not convinced that the cry of "install Ubuntu" is necessarily the best course of action for many folks. For all its old faults XP is nowadays a very capable OS and obviously Macs are idiot proof.

Horses for course, innit... Ubuntu isn't quite 100% there yet, but its very close... Xp is okay, as long as you lock it down tight, but this isn't something the mainstream user will do.

OS X is great and (IMO) well worth spending extra for something that works.

(Personally I see none of them as Gaming o/s... If I want to play a game I want something thats instant on and I don't var to worry about viruses/updating)

oh do fuck off.

I use Ubuntu, Mac OSX & XP, don't work, and never buy anything from PC World<<<I have donein the past...but only coz Novatech pissed me off for a couple of years at the start of the century, as their chosen couriers could never find where I live.

:p

Aces!

If you want to use XP without being bothered by internet nasties, it's best to reconfigure the default installation substantially.

One needs to set up a password-protected user account; shut down and disable a whole bunch of services; uninstall various MS components; set various directories to read only; replace IE with Firefox and Outlook with Thunderbird; and install various third party products (like AVG and Zone Alarm). Probably best to use a firewall appliance with egress filtering as well.

Like the man said: horses for courses. But even after all that, it still won't be quite as safe and secure to use on the 'net as is the default Ubuntu installation.

I think people are getting their knickers in a twist over nothing much. Wishface asked a simple question and others have read something more into it than is there. I haven't followed wishface's posting history so don't know if there are past problems with people though. The fuss seems to be because some assume that he was using Windiz for updates because he had a dodgy copy of XP but this seems not to be the case.

However back to the original question. My guess that the reason that Windiz can no longer update XP after December is that Microsoft itself will cease to support XP after this time. Windiz gets its updates from Microsoft, it doesn't write them. This decision to cease support was was announced earlier in the year by MS and I made a post about it then, wherein I wondered about going to Ubuntu rather than upgrade to Vista. The other answer is to continue using XP unsupported.

I wonder if there will be any real problem in continuing to use XP after it ceases to be supported. Will there be many hackers still bothering to intrude into XP? Won't they just concentrate on Vista.

XP is supported for a long while yet - I forget when, but there's a third service pack (SP3) coming out. Windiz, Autopatcher et al were stopped by Microsoft, I believe.

Even though new vulnerabilities will continue to be found in xp, you can make it difficult or impossible for them to be exploited to attack your set-up.

It's smart to have your windows boxes behind an appliance firewall. Just insulate your own network (perhaps just the one machine) from the 'net!

You should still do the stuff in #77, and adopt good practices -- Computer Security for the Home and Small Office by Thomas Greene is very helpful with both of these.

Yeah, SP3 will be the last. Here's the announcement made by the windiz team.

April 2014 seems to be the date to which Microsoft will be supporting XP I now find.

This link is my source (July 18 2007) and it also gives information on how to add some of Vistas features to XP for those who don't want to upgrade.

I wasn't patronising you at all. Sorry you saw it like that. Ubuntu really does work. Got fed up with having to fix my mums laptop all the time so I put Ubunutu on it. That was over 2 years ago and it's still runnin fine with no requests for further support.
Why would I recommend a geek OS? This thread isn't looking for a geek OS is it. For ease of use and for a beginners foot into the world of Unix I do recommend Ubuntu. I recognise most people dont want to buy a mac nor do they want to complile their own kernel. They just want their hardware to be recognised and the internet to work. IMO Ubuntu does it pretty good.
Apologies if you thought I was patronising you I really wasn't. I tend to be a bit swearier when I do that. ;)
