I use ubuntu at work cos it does everything I need and does it better than windows.
I use windows at home cos the poker software I use doesn't work on ubuntu.

Incidently, Ubuntu Linux is far easier than Windows to use safely on the internet, especially if you're not an expert. Security works best when one can see what's really happening on the machine. Unlike MS offerings, open-source like linux has no secrets from you.

Disks as in CDs? Yeah, CDs use a standard format across everything - Win, Linux, Mac, etc.

Variously formatted other devices - hard drives, USB drives, etc. May or may not work depending on some fiddling and bodging.
