I remember on previous machines having to delete *.tmp and ~*.* files but Win 10 seems to have taken care of them for me.

What about defragging, is it still worth doing that?

Anything else I should be doing?

Unless you've meddled enough to stop it, defrag is done for you in the background if it were required.

eta: My son is complaining his computer is very slow.

It is a fast gaming machine.

I just tried to find temp files and couldn't find any, then I looked for the defrag option and it is there. Wondering what else could have caused his machine to slow?

Look at task manager when it’s slow and see what’s eating up resources.

As Mr shot says, look at what programs are running in the background.
See if there are loads of browser extensions.
Have a scroll through add remove programs to see if there's a load of old shit.
    Is the disk full?
    Is it old?
Is it only slow when working hard. Is the fan and heat sink all clogged up with dust fluff and pubes.

Run the free version of Malwarebytes, then disable and delete all the browser extensions he's got from gaming sites, run Malwarebytes again. Check the startup processes and clean that out, too. Have a chat about online safety awareness, and perhaps have "The Talk" about incognito mode.
