Wimbledon 2008...

Is that because of the tendency towards baseline tennis that has creeped into the grass over the years? Why has serve & volley diminished so much in recent years?

A lot has been made of the change in grass/soil and a slight tweak to the balls making the ball slower off the surface, negating the heavy serves that are much more common but unfortunately also meaning there's less margin for error on volleys.

It still stays low, but the US and Australian Opens are faster than Wimbledon now.

I would really have liked to go round the outer courts, but I get the feeling I'm going to want to make the most of having Court 1 tickets. Hopefully will have time to get about though :)

If you've got No1 tickets, you'll have a great time - you can get a lot closer to the players on the outside courts so it's worth having a look (you get a real feel for the pace they play at), but there'll be some cracking matches on the show courts. It's also nice to be able to nip for a drink without losing your spot!

I'm going to Wimbledon on Wednesday
Gonna queue up for a ground pass. Does anyone know what kind of time I ought to turn up? I was kind of hoping it wouldn't be insanely busy at 8.30am ish. I mean, schools haven't broken up yet, presumably most adults will be at work....

So they're basically just playing safe? Cowards  ;)

Yeah, that will be a plus. Like I said, might try and take a look at the outside courts while we're there. They open earlier than the show courts don't they? Might try and get there earlier, though as we're coming from North London I'm not sure how early that'll be...

Federer wins easily.;)
:p

In my experience it's pretty random - sometimes I've queued for 30 minutes, other times I've given up after 6 hours.

Play doesn't start until 12:00 on the outside courts (11:00 for some matches in the second week) and 1:00pm for the show courts. The ground opens at 10:30, get there a little after that would be my bet - some people will queue for ages so they can rush to the parts of the show courts that allow groundpass access (bits of No2 and court 14, if memory serves) so let them go in and there should be a lull afterwards. I say should, sometimes you're just unlucky...

eta: I've just checked the website, apparently there's a single ticket office - the queue might be a bit long, but it's cash only so it should shift. As it's not on the turnstiles you might want to get there a bit earlier - note that you have to buy your own, so all your mates have to queue with you.

Yep, basically they've got to either hit it more firmly or be a bit more courageous in their aim. Not easy to do when certain players can get around 100mph on their groundstrokes!

Gates open at 10:30, general play starts at 12:00 and show courts at 1:00. If you've got tickets you go straight through, the queues are for daily ground passes. Easy to walk to from Southfields tube, there's also a shuttle you can catch from there as well.

Like the game, can't abide the BBC style; may as well get the bunting out, have a Spitfire flypast and rejoice at this event in which we're all so glad to be sharing in out funny old British way.

8yilhj8pio;

Thing is Murray's obviously a bit of dickhead too.

Doesn't seem to attract the best of the British, does tennis.

It is in fact quite extraordinary how much of tosser that man was/is. Talk about hype's potential to conceal even the lamest of twats.

bizarre how a talented tennis player who tried his best wasn't good enough to win a grand slam can arouse so much hatred. doesn't make any sense

Yeah i don't get all the henman hatred tbh. Its like we just want to shoot down anyone whose talented/english. What a backwards country this is.

Bogdanovic out in the first round, quelle surprise.

Once the next big thing, got to the semi of the US junior open. Still, he's only 24.

Elana Baltacha won!!!

She was two breaks down and won 7-5 in the final set!!! Fantastic stuff! Her dad used to play for the tractor boys y'know.......

I like Wimbledon......
