If you were previously recording with Room mics, as we were, then the difference is quite literally amazing. It blew us away how much better it was once you weren't just room mic'ing the band.
The entire Guitar sound seems to grow massively.
It seems the drums/bass in the room eat up all the bandwidth of the Mics and all you get on guitar is a small frequency selection and it sounds tired, flat and shit, even when turned up ridiculously, ear bleedingly loud.
Now I am at half the volume I used to be, which gives me more control, and yet my recordings are ten times sweeter then previously.
We've done it where we mic'ed up the instruments, and had someone on the mixer while we played into a 2-track hard drive recorder.
This time we did headphone monitoring and made sure we had the drum kit isolated and mic'ed up properly (two overheads for the cymbals/hihats, snare mic & kick drum mic). Will be playing in the guitar again using Guitar Rig, to get it sounding a little better than we had it (the headphone out on my amp sounds a little weedy).
