Yes I agree, I'm just saying it wasn't the only community singing. I do think we don't sing as much. Well, maybe in the kitchen when the radio is on, or in Karaoke bars, but not loudly and lustily in a group got together for that purpose only.

I just caught a brief moment of Songs Of Praise and was moved by all the people singing about their omnipotent god and was thinking how unfair it was for us poor atheists.

there was a strong choir tradition in the communist bloc - although I imagine you could argue it's roots were still in religious choirs but with new hymns to tractor quotas etc.
an idea and a collective belief in something bigger than oneself is what they share and frankly that is just about heresy in terms of how we live and behave now, it's actively discouraged I think.
Atheism doesn't really hold out much hope or joy if you ask me. in fact even the idea it offers consolation is deluded I think.
