Three thousand years from now, London will probably be a pile of ancient ruins. I'm not sure how it will get that way, or when the thing will happen, but it'll probably be some sort of crisis that brings it about.

I agree but the pile will not be visible above the water. It only needs the Thames Barrier to fail one winter's night and London will be submerged. I live out in the suburbs and have already put up a beach hut by the ring road in my inland town which will be on the coast in about 20 years time.

Where I live, the sea level might rise, which won't be so bad, because I live about 350 feet above sea level. What worries me more, is the mega-thrust quake that's lining up out where the Pacific Plate is sliding under the continental plate, except it seems it's been sticking for a few centuries. It will probably pull free with an immense ripping sound.

why would some green anarcho no borders types be allowed in govt

Because people like Plane Stupid, the Green party and No Borders are in the news avocating 'solutions' to current crises. If the issues these groups are associated with become far far more serious then any administration that wants to look like it's doing something will probably want to co-opt such media faces, to look like they're doing something. Rather like the way Zac Goldsmith is going to feature soon in a Tory government, as his eco have become a part of the political mainstream.

Bear in mind the scale of the comparison. The Second World War threatened Britain with national extinction and enslavement by one of the worst tyrannies ever to have existed. Unless global warming is set to sink these islands, I don't think even that compares.

Gloval climate change could easily 'threaten' the UK with a severe regime change on the scale of a UK Vichy regime.

But what I'm talking about is more the way that WW2 actually manifested itself for the UK - a crisis that cost tens of thousands of cilvilian lives and hundreds of thousands of soldiers and alslo swallowed up most of these islands' industrial production.

A nuclear bomb will be used against a major population target by 2020 , and nobody will know for sure who put it there . .The bomb will be of middle eastern or Russian in origin , and by the end of the next decade .

its all happy news on urban 75

very short nuclear war between northkorea and china which solves china's population crisis, gets rid of kim jong il and the reulting mini nuclear winter reverses global warming meaning everything can go on exactly as it was for another 100 years

I dont think that'll happen personaly. If anyone drops a nuke it will be the USA

I do think the USA will eventually have a civil war tho btw resulting in some areas becoming independent - not necessarily with the existing borders - although probably not in the next 20 years, more like the next 50 or something

god its all fun and games :D

I think we are heading for the sort of scenarios sketched out in the first part of Ken MacLeod's Fall Revolution novels, in his The Execution Channel and The Night Sessions.....
Ken is the Jules Verne/HG Wells of our epoch;)
That is all assuming the Swine Ebola doesn't get us all 28 Days Later-ish fashion.

plenty of nukes floating around in the ex russkie 'stans ...... bit of a worry

but if Pakistan politically destabilizes , the nukes will provide easy petro dollars for the new theocracy to establish themselves in their early years ...

more likely the US may be on the receiving end , not the delivery

Fascism or Socialism in 5 years time!

Fuck it. I'm applying for a shot gun licence and start stocking up on ammo now, might even be able to stock up on a few hand guns, cross bows, home made anti personell rockets, explosives and savage dogs.
Gonna start filling my house with bags of rice and pasta and stake out a farm house.
Will have to recruit a few like minded people and when the government falls move in convoy to the farm house, kill the occupants and set up a fortified community run on communistic values.
We will kidnap or kill folk depending on their financial value and, overtime build a sustainable community with the strength to defend it's self and to witch will afford it's citizens a decent way of life, thus attracting vetted recruits to the Autonomous Commonwealth.

Come the glorious day!

Ken MacLeod is excellent. Star Fraction is weird he worked at Brunel University so some of the early setting is local.

Pakistan isn't stable. It can't maintain its borders. If the nuclear weapons were likely to change hands the USA and India would be forced to intervene.

The Wicker Man.

Much worse. 1990s nostalgia.
