Will speakers in the bathroom kill me?

Quad Electrostatics

Probably the least suitable speakers for the bathroom. The diaphragm bias voltage is several KV, but with no more current available than an ioniser, you can safely draw sparks off it with your finger.

The stators, however are driven by stepping up the audio with a transformer and grabbing hold of both stator wires while playing heavy dub, is apparently not recommended

.
You know, now, no doubt that's patented ... and I believe that there is specific provision in the patent act for an interested person to go grab the patents (hell you can download them nowadays :)) and build their own copy of any invention (you just can't sell it)...?

Hmm :D

Hmm :D

I own 3 pairs of these - two pairs (stacked) in my main room and one day I will get around to fixing my first pair and paint them white for the main bedroom.

It's a constant battle to resist buying a 4th pair - no doubt I may one day have to cave in and exchange my door-sized stacked quads for something a bit more domestically acceptable with a sub-woofer :(

I DO have a book on DIY electrostatics, but life's too short ..... headphones are relatively easy to make with perspex and clingfilm ....

Aww would you really? :(

I'll be in your neck of the woods in July... :D

Here is the range of estimates for lethal currents through the heart: they range 60 to 200 milliamps.

I'll take 100 milliamps (0.1 amp).

It's ages since I built an amplifier, but:

A speaker has an impedance (equivalent for these purposes to resistance) of 8 ohms, yes?

So since V = IR (voltage drop = current * resistance) and Power in watts = IV, the voltage across a speaker delivering a healthy domestic 500 watts will be given by V^2 = PR or V-squared = 500*8; V = square_root(4000) =~ 66.6V.

The internal resistance of the amplifier will be less than this, yes?

So to deliver 100mA you need to get the combined internal resistance of the amp and resistance through your body down to ... umm... R = V/I = 66.6/0.1 = 666 ohms :D

This guide to IEE regulations says we can take the resistance of the body of a person sat in a bath as 200 ohms.

(It also gives a much more cautious "10 mA is seldom likely to prove fatal".)

Conclusion: if you sit in the bath and bite the speaker cable you can most definitely kill yourself on the amplifier output.

Probably the last thing you'll hear is the first beat of the bass kicking in.

Disclaimer: this is an example of back-of-an-envelope physics and not to be used for any other purpose. If you have the slightest inclination to try it, call the Samaritans; in the UK they are on 08457 90 90 90.

Keep up the good work gang!

I have nothing useful whatsoever to add, but this is my favourite thread atm, so I'm blatantly bumping it...  :D

50Kv fine

30 amps (you're chips)
Except that, to get 30 amps going through you, you need to be in circuit with a supply whose voltage is going to result in that kind of current passing through you. The current is TOTALLY dependent on the voltage and the resistance in the circuit, it's as simple as that.

I expect you're going to tell me you're a certified electrician, now?

No. I know.

the condensation gettin in the speaker and or speaker wires could cause it to blow it yea...but when i was younger i used to stick the telly on the toilet and watch telly in the bath and im still here/

alternativiely leave the bathroom door open and stick your beats on as loud as you can

I want some speakers in my bathroom. Do people still think it's a bad idea? Is it prohibitively expensive? I want a stereo in my bedroom and some extra speakers in the bathroom. Possible?

unless your bathroom is incredibly damp, just get some cheap speakers from the local car boot.

I briefly had a bass unit under my downstairs floor and had problems with slugs. I was thinking of putting a heater in it. :)

It does get very steamy in there

I can't give solid advice as , whereas I've had a TV and radio in mine for years with no problems, I only heat a tank of water every couple of weeks or so and my window doesn't fit the frame properly ...

You could try wrapping them in clingfilm - my electrostatics are anyway ...

Those maplins ones aren't that expensive and it's my b'day in april :) Mind you, there's no guarantee that they're any good is there?
