Well, I've learned that women describing sexist abuse and black people describing racist abuse ought to be listened to carefully before being dismissed. If nothing else, it should be for those with an interest in defending the white male bully to show his campaign didn't do these things.

The problem with discrimination is hardly that people are ignored when they make accusations without offering any evidence, it's that they offer evidence which is then dismissed out of hand, which is not happening here.

I've seen pieces where people claim that Respect were handing out dodgy leaflets, but amazingly nobody seems to be able to produce one, and even without that I recall that Respect were able to disprove allegations that they'd ever been there at the time in any case. Not that New Labour would ever just flat out lie... oh hold on.

If I'd seen something that had any backup I'd say something, I have no political allegiance here, but I just haven't, and I've seen an awful lot of clearly deliberate smears.

Let me get this straight, Galloway should be considered guilty because unsubstantiated claims were made against him and should have to prove his innocence? Stalinist Russia here we come! (not that Galloway would mind that)

This isnt a sexual harassment case (and even if it was it would not be for Galloway to prove his innocence) its an election campaign. I really find it hard to believe Kings this sensitive, innocent victim of just telling the truth. Shes been selected for a safe seat of the ruling political party. She knows how to work the system and how the system works.

I suppose because she's, in part, implying that GG & Respect are somehow involved in it. If she has evidence of this then she should produce it.

The fact there are anti-semites in her borough doesn't mean they actually are involved in her opponents campaign.

Well, Oona's aliagations of sexism are not that unbelievable given some of the comments on this thread are they?

I remember that there was a rather disgusting respect leaflet portraying Oona as a "slut". There was a very deliberatly selected picture of her in a short skirt and caked in make up (actually the colour resolution of the photo had blatently been enhanced to emphasise her lipstick) right next to a piece about her comments concerning her sex life in the press.

With regards to anti-semitism - I don't think there's any evidence that Respect supporters engaged in this but But they did adopt a policy of turning the other cheek so to speak. For instance, when Oona and other jewish mourners was pelted with eggs whilst commemorating the WW2 bombing of a Jewish neigbourhood it was alledged that Respect supporters carried this out. Now – whilst this may not have been true – Respect’s response was pretty ramshackle. All they could do was issue a response saying that they “did not condone egg throwing”.

Having said all that, Oona was a Blairite careerist who richly deserved to lose her seat. But I don’t buy that Respect fought a clean campaign (not that Oona did either).

She had an article plugging her book in yesterdays Sunday Times though there is nothing in her points [iirc] that aren't in OU programs on Notting Hill Carnival or various books on football hooliganism, and its 15 years too late anyway.

I've no great lake of love for Oona King but she was by all accounts a pretty good constituency MP and was at least not Galloway. King actually turned up at Parliament and represented her constituents something that cannot be said for Galloway.

Well the issue was whether her race, gender and Jewishness were an issue. Grogwilton suggested that "even the most mad dog Respectophobes have yet to provide a shred of evidence that they were".

It seems to me that her own testimony as to what Respect and its hangers on did to her is a pretty good shred. She works as a journalist and makes some or all of her living from that trade - the newspaper in which her signed article is printed ought to be irrelevant. I somehow doubt if the Islington Socially Concerned Citizen's Journal or whatever would pay as well, or get such a readership, as the Daily Mail. If you were a semi or fully professional journalist (and I don't know if you are, honest) needing to pay the electricity bill, would you turn up your nose at the Daily Mail?
