Will Brown go? THE SWEEPSTAKE

Brown exit date will be

  • Total voters
    90
Paddy Power has it 4-1 odds on that he'll be gone by August.

Personally I think it'll be Tuesday. Labour's gonna get a proper trashing in the Euro on Sunday, Monday he'll somehow manage to cling on as more and more backbenchers come forward during the day calling for his head. The trickle will become a flood by Monday night, and on Tuesday he'll have no other chance than leave.

I think you are all underestimating his survival today. Brown is a product of the Scottish Labour party and an expert at infighting and its going to take a bit more than a few second rate Blair clones to oust him.

Labour MP's face a very simple choice. Get rid of Brown now and have an election and lose thier seats or keep him for a year and then have an election and lose their seats.

I reckon they will go for another year in office because its possible that events MAY save the day for Brown. Unlikely but who knows but thats their only hope.

Their train of thought may be that by distancing themselves from Brown now - and publicly - they can go to their constituents saying "Look, I've nothing to do with any of this, I agree this government is a failure, the only people I'm responsible to are you. By all means throw the nasty man out but please re-elect me!!"

Lots of debate at work but I reckon Brown will stay until the end. May 2010 general election - then lose big.

Why would anyone - Johnson? Want to be PM only to lose come the gen election. No Brown must take the hit. Lots of Labour MPs looking for alternative employment - it will get more desparate as things look worse.

Will I shed a tear, I think not.

IMO he ain't going anywhere. The economy seems to be recovering a bit and no way is he going to let someone else take the credit for his hard work.

Nah, the economy will soon dive once again and Brown, through clinging on longer that anyone in the country wants him to, will just end up leaving government as a national hate figure to rival Thatcher and a national joke to rival Jim Callaghan. He'll live out the rest of his days huddled in a corner pleading with the god who abandoned him to be allowed to go back and simply resign next monday. And nobody will feel sorry for him, because he's only got himself to blame.

Nope, he'll stay on
there'll be hung parliament.
If the labour bedrock just turns out
it's assured.

Uh-huh.
So, what do you reckon the small parties/independents are going to horse-trade for (given that we can pretty much guess what the lib-dems will be shopping for)?

Immediately after the danger of the PLP meeting (which may just break-out into a bare knuckle fight!) there is a Progress meeting (i.e. the Blairites):
Focus on the fourth term: where have we come from and how can we get there?
Stephen Byers, Ben Bradshaw, Steve Richards, Denis MacShane, Lorna Fitzsimons
08 June 2009
19:00 to 20:30
Elections on 4 June will be the final electoral test before the next general election, when Labour faces the challenging task of winning a fourth term in office. This event aims to assess the state of the party after the 4 June elections, and look forward to what needs to be done over the coming year in order to form a government for a fourth time.
Speakers:
Ben Bradshaw MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP
Rt Hon Denis MacShane MP, former Minister for Europe
Steve Richards, The Independent
Lorna Fitzsimons, Patron of Progress (Chair)

if he stays on, the tories WILL win.

If he goes, they may just retain enough votes for a hung parliament

Dunno about that, the BBC coverage last night did a reasonable job at one point of showing just what a large swing the Tories need to get a majority.

Labour backbenchers simply haven't got any reason to dump Brown.

"Electing" another 3rd rate non-entity as their leader might just precipitate an early election and that would mean the loss of a year's Parliamentary salary and expenses rather than waiting for the inevitable job-loss next year.

There just aren't enough 3rd rate Ploytechnics advertising for lecturers to provide them all with a job now so they'll dig their nails into the edge of the precipice.

The problem is that if Labour goes down to 3rd place the Liberals, Tories and SNP will scoop-up massive number of seats regardless of the national percentages.

the FT.com blog give a full list of Labour's firsts scored last night:

How bad? Worse than Ramsay MacDonald
June 8, 2009 11:50am by Alex Barker
It is worth recapping on just how terrible this round of elections has been for Labour.

– Labour is now the third party of local government in England, with fewer councillors than the Liberal Democrats for the first time since the First World War

– Labour secured the lowest vote share ever recorded by a serving government in both elections

– Labour fell under 20 per cent vote share for the first time since 1910, when the party was four years old

– Labour controls no county councils

– Labour lost a poll Wales for the first time since the First World War

– Labour have no MEPs in the South West region for the first time ever

– Labour were beaten by four parties in two regions of the country

– Labour recorded an 8 per cent vote share in the South East

Looks like Brown has come through the PLP meeting, the tribal instincts kicked in and there was big cheer for him , though some did call for him to stand down.

Well, it seems he is intent on pursuing the welfare reforms, so the uncaring twat deserves to go, this was a chance to rethink them but no, got to wrongfoot the Tories.
