Wiley - Cash In My Pocket

nah, boolax to that. my son goes to big and small grime bash's all the time, and Wiley is still big on that scene.

Honestly, I used to agree with you but this new album is excellent. Give a monkey's if it's hip or not at this stage in my life, really.

Besides which, Wiley has NEVER put out a decent album. Walking on Thin Ice was shocking in parts and the last one weren't much better. As far as the mainstream goes, he was drinking in the last chance saloon when he came up with "...rolex", which is his only big hit so far. So there's your answer, basically. One hit single does not a Prince Rogers Nelson make.

I do like Wiley though, always have done. He's about 30 odd now isn't he?

so ken, an artist is only good if they make lots of 'big hits'?

not so matey. i disagree strongly.

No, but they are only a huge pop star like that though. Otherwise, I may as well call myself a huge popstar.

Fuck it. I'm a huge popstar. I'm Chris Isaac.

no one's said Wiley's a huge pop star though.

and maybe, just maybe he's not bothered about being a huge pop star.

shocking, but it might be true.

I'd probably go with the latter. The beat definitely came from the rave scene, but the MCing's gotta be from hip-hop.

The MC-ing is via pirate radio, and jungle. So I think Foo is on the money really - I see it as more to do with reggae soundsystem MC-ing than hip hop.

Tho there are obvious "grey areas" - Shut Up And Dance thought they were making fast UK hip hop until they were hijaked by the rave scene. And some of yr UK hip hop types (Sway? Skinnyman? Klashnekoff?) have done some grime things iirc.

LTC opened the thread pondering why Wiley wasn't a massive pop star. That LITERALLY happened, foo!

I definitely disagree that he isn't bothered by being a big star, cos I've seen him give interviews where he has talked about aiming for that very definitely. Don't kid yourself that he's like Belle and Sebastien, mate, he wants to be mega!

I also agree with you 100% that having big hits and being brilliant are not the same thing at all. Look at me, for instance, I've only ever made no.7 in Cyprus with my cover of "Anyway you Want It" by Journey.

Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me!

you're excused :) x

no more talk of Kings of Leon though please. it's upsetting the balance of the thread <ponce mode> :D

edit: i am the saddest fuckwit in the world :o cos i am stupidly pleased that Fozzie Bear agreed with me :o (he was my music forum hero when he posted more)

For people that like punk and Kings of Leon, it might not be. Pity them, for they are weak.

actually I have tastes that covers many genres ( I like a fair bit of grime so I am vaguely qualified to offer an opinion :p )

I also don't like Kings of Leon before anyone accuses me of that .
