WiFi vs Wired Download Speeds

Any speed testing appps for the iPhone? I only recently got an AC 5Ghz router and it does seem quicker but would be nice to know. Actually I think you can get Iperf on iOS, will check.

On about 12mbps ADSL, which suits me fine.

There is an app from Speedtest.net called Speedtest.

:D so my tablet gets 73 Mbps, my phone gets 105 and my laptop gets.... 5.72.

Ookla tests, run at the same time in the same place.

I've checked network adapter config, looks alright. I've got a VPN but it's turned off.

I've updated the drivers and it's got it up to 15 Mbps. Connected via 5Ghz. Changed the router to auto select channels (which is recommended on the screen but not default for some reason)

I think maybe the adapter is just crap. It's a 7260-N. Sure I've had higher values than this though.

Go to the intel driver update website and install the recommended updates.

I've already done that.

I noticed that the connection type listed in task manager is 802.11n, whereas the only options in the card properties are 802.11a,b,g. Does that matter?

Yes - max throughput on g is 54mbps

Your card “should” do 300.

What do the driver options say ?

Try enabling 40 MHz bands, disabling legacy protocols like a b and g.

What options do you have available to you.

Alex

Advanced Intel® Wireless Adapter Settings

I checked in the command prompt and the connection is listed as 802.11n so it seems to be working fine. I might just get a bloody wire, not sure what else it can be. :)

1 weird thing is that the speed has been exactly 15.23 Mbps the last five times I've run the test. I'd expect a bit of fluctuation.

Do you mean the 802.11n channel width setting? That can be either 20 Hz or Auto, and it's on Auto.

Try setting it to 40mhz or wide on the router.

What model ios devices did you do the tests on ?

The card in your laptop wasn’t crap when it came out, it’s a bit old now - but it should be able to get a lot faster than 15mbps.

Do the speed test in a browser with all extensions turned off, or try it in chrome and ie.

I gave up using the wifi on the superhub in the end and bought a seperate router to flash with DDWRT.

Router doesn't have that setting. It's pretty limited.

Phone is an Android Xiaomi Note 4, tablet is a Samsung Galaxy A.

IE gives pretty much the same results (15Mbps in Ookla, 19 in the windows speed test)

I just plugged in a USB dongle, disabled the original adapter, and got exactly the same result. So it isn't the card.

It's going to be something really stupid isn't it.

Is there some setting somewhere that might limit the wifi connection speed?

Or I just buy a cable for a fiver and do something with my life other than looking at wifi settings. :D

Maybe make sure 2.4ghz is set to b g and n signal. If possible. Should still be able to handle very fast speeds.

Try and get 5ghz signal on one device to test as well. Not always as good range but should be more reliable and def faster.

Look at some analysis software to see if the channel needs changing but the auto default one is usually fine.

Might be worth borrowing a router to test with the virgin box in modem mode, see if that makes a big difference.

802.11b has a max speed of 11Mbps
802.11g has a max speed of 54Mbps

Not sure how making sure they are turned on will speed things up.

B n and g together means on a decent router you can get speeds of up to 600 mbps in theory. I am no expert!

My point was just that it might be only set to b or something hence the super slow speeds.

What about checking drivers for your wireless card and/or the firmware on the virgin box?

As you know that wired or ethernet is much faster than wi-fi but have a limitation of cabling and limited area of the range. But you can also test it yourself. Just Go to speedtest.net and test your Internet speed using Wi-Fi then wired and compare the speed of both connections. And you can also check the latest version of windows of your laptop because it is also one of the reasons which effects download speed.
