Widen me and the boys horizons: name one musical masterpiece each

i'm gonna have to fire up spotify and see if it's on there

(yes it is, and it still sounds fine)

'Up With People' by Lambchop (off the Nixon album)

it's a bit odd but is a lovely bit of pop music. and it's got a gospel choir and trumpets on it, what more do you need?

Thank everyone!

Once I've collected a goodly number I may make an "U75 recommends..." album, with the poster's name. Other parents could request a CD if they wanted.

btw the more info you give about a tune, why you love it, why it's a classic, the more likely it will be to be on the list. For example, Dies Irae will certainly be on there with that recommendation.

Parisienne Walkways - Gary Moore.
Something Inside So Strong - Labi Sifre.
She's In Love With You - Suzi Quatro.
Wild World - Cat Stevens.
Spirit Of Radio - Rush.
Another Nail In My Heart - Squeeze.
Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen.

for big music this is great

Kugutsuuta ura mite chiru

difficult to translate but it's a lament on the cycle of life and death

In grief, Nue will sing
When i look back, flowers will fall away
The heart of solace, having withered.
In a new world, Gods will descend,
the dawn will break, and Nue will sing

Blimey - off the top of my head in several different genres:

Barber - Adagio for strings
Phillip Glass - Glassworks
Orbital - Insides
Faith no More - Angel Dust
Asian dub Foundation - Community Music
Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me
Pulp - Different Class
John Peel - Fabric Live 07
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Boatman's Call

That reminds me...

Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi (Kooyanykatsi)...soundtrack to the film (well, visual experience) of the same name. One of the most sublime pieces of contemporary classical music ever, incorporating a global set of influences and turning them into something that can genuinely take you away somewhere special.

Those are albums! You're meant to recommend a SINGLE masterpiece. With a brief description of why it is a sublime example of a musical type!

Billy Paul - Am I Black Enough for You

followed by Kidz in the Hall - Move On Up
which samples the riff and the verse

Funk + hip-hop

Janacek - Sinfonietta. Ace stuff, only about 20/25 minutes long so handy for short attention spans, full of theatrically vivid and dramatic music.

"Snowflakes are Dancing" - Tomita

OK it's the title of the album as well as an individual piece of music but the whole LP is great. Electronic renditions of Debussy's "Tone Paintings" (his term) - great for conjuring up pictures in the mind (I'll sort you out with a copy)

Since this is music to listen to on the way to school, you have to listen to Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall.

Miserlou - that superfast guitar song from Pulp Fiction - is one I always recommend when music recommendation threads come up. It's so good at waking you up that it could probably be used to raise the recently dead.

How about some real golden oldies? Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World and Bing Crosby's Fly Me to the Moon are the first two that come to mind as relaxing ones, and then there's Rock Around the Clock, Great Balls of Fire, Heartbreak Hotel and so on for livelier tunes. My daughter likes some old jazz; Gershwin's Summertime makes you feel like you are lazing in a bayou somewhere, and Fever's a wonderful song - but it must be Nina Simone's version, nobody else's.

Sorry. That's a bit more than one. It's a lovely idea of yours - and lots of work for you!
