Wicker Man Remake

Right then - I'll put my hand up, I've just seen it.

I went to see this with an open mind. OF course it's a shame that Hollywood has to resort to remakes when there are plenty of decent new stories out there (I'm sure), and I'm a massive fan of the original, but I thought I'd at least try and put the thoughts of Woodward and Lee in the back of my mind.

I lasted about an hour - nothing majorly wrong with the film during the first hour, a few hollywood touches (car crash, etc) but nothing totally out of order.

Some bones of contention though - ***May contain spoilers***

Mutual distain between the conservative Christian and the Pagan
Not there - the women on Summersisle seemed to follow a mish mash of any old shite, borrowing from the pagan tradition where it's necassary for the plot, but mainly based around bees. Cage doesn't seem to begrudge them their religion, and tries to cop off with one of them (an ex-girlfriend).

Also in this version the coppers desire to find the girl is not driven by religion, or by a sense of duty, its driven by the fact he finds out the girl is his daughter.

Cheesy suspense
Instead of having the copper wander around finding his own blind alleys to look down, people on the island pretty much tell him anything. To add a bit of suspense the old crappy trick of him having a 'Double Dream' is employed, which is totaly pointless. Instead of relatively normal people slowly building suspense based on their slightly strange actions, some people who are just total nutters are brought in to add a quick and easy aire of creepyness - Two old blind women who speak in unison spring instantly to mind.

No Paul Giovanni music
:( - No music to speak of at all.

That said - I was still giving it a chance until about an hour and a bit in, when two lines of preposterous dialogue got the whole cinema laughing and spoiled any chance the film had

Cage pulls a gun on a woman with a bike and says "Step away from the bike"

Minutes later when Cage is ransacking the village looking for Rowan, when a woman asks if he has permission he says "You have my permission...... To stay out of my fucking way".

Add to that scenes of an old looking Cage kicking women in the face, and I couldn't take it serously again.

All in all - lazy and not worth the bother, whether you've seen the original or not.

How can they have the Wicker Man without the music and the religious tension? Why not just have a film adaptation of V for Vedetta without him being an anarchist?

Oh.

That, and what with it being set in the US (  ) means I prolly won't even bother to download it.

hehe, i forgot i posted this thread. havent seen it yet, may download it at some point. those two lines sound hilarious and awful at the same time.

Has anyone else seen this? I'm probably asking for a slaughtering but I actually enjoyed it (in a comedic sort of way) and I'm as big a fan as any of the original

"Step away from the bike"

Oh no. No no no no no no.....

I saw the director's cut the other night :) Was superb - lots of lost footage - it's a much better film for it I think.

It does make a lot more sense doesn't it.

"Willow McGregor, I present Ash Buchannon"

Lucky bleeder - and he gets to phallically crown the maypole the next morning too!

The commentary is hilarious, Lee going on and on and on about British Lion films being wankers, reel buried in the road etc.

I haven't listened to the commentary but the accompanying doc is funny - him, the writer and the director are just so scathing about the film industry in general and individuals involved in the distribution in particular.

I get the impression from the trailer that this version has something of the paranormal about it (seeing things, things disappearing, etc) and that's not how it's supposed to be at all!

Tis best commentary ever-apart from Conan The Barbarian which has Arnie slowly saying exactly what he is doing all the way through-'this is when I hit the camel' etc. I laughed so hard i was a bit sick

It's so funny, Kermode keeps trying to move on to the next scene and Lee is all "Yes but this is really important, I'm very very annoyed by this, one of the greatest films ever made is under a road somewhere in London and it needs digging up..there are still bits missing of me acting beautifully and talking about sparrows"
