Why Socialists should support Respect

I actually have some sympathy with what you're saying rebel, all I'm saying is that you seem to be implying that ANY piss taking of Islamic religious leaders is wrong....

Any of the muslim lads I work with would laugh at you if you told them that. In a "funny ha ha" way, also "funny peculiar"

Okay, okay, lets try and take the heat out of this. But still, I just don't follow that logic. I'm involved in anti-racism stuff on and off and have been for a long time - but why does that mean you can't make comments - humorous or analytical - about authority systems in particular religions? In fact i would put it the other way round - its actually indefensible to ignore things on the grounds that group x are on the receiving end of racism

You what? I'm laughing at them yes.

You are laughing at Martin Luther King and the bus joke. I suggest you read a little bit more about the US civil rights movement.

Shouldn't you be our shouting at people anyway?

I should be doing something more profitable than exposing you lot as pseudo revolutionary Tory-anarchists, yes. Quite right, sir. I'll let flimsier analyse the Ian Donavan article in peace - that should be interesting.

Rebel can you debate in a rational way? Obviously I'm not saying that the left shouldn't defend TU leaders from the right-wing. What I'm saying is that because the right-wing media attacks them does that mean the left should NEVER take the piss out of trade union leaders? Surely you're not saying that?

And while I agree that in this climate that people have to be careful with humour in terms of Islam, I still don't think that means that people should NEVER take the piss out of Islamic leaders. But are you seriously saying now that we shouldn't even criticise Islamic leaders?!?!

As for Workers Powers work in the miner's strike I'd say it pisses all over the SWP with your "downturn" theory but that's another debate. Calling for worker's councils in one of the biggest workers strikes in British history - madness I tell you!

Fuck off you twat. I was actually saying that considering that's the title of the thread, I would've expected some discussion of the article on the thread. I made a sarcy point on there being no such discussion. Then I saw you write something preponderously hypocritical.

As i've said before RW, they're going to eat you alive in the real world. They really are. If you ever leave campus in your life that is.

So, from that crack of mine - which i think you asked for (literally) - do you really think that I am opposed to the US civil rights movement? If you do think that you need to mug up on the concepts of humour and irony

respect is an electoral project. i don't think socialists should back them because they will never have the mass support needed to electorally implement socialistic policies in what is a massive, predominantly conservative British state.

so only certain people can take the piss out of certain people

that's your great idea of e-qual-ity!

I wonder if it has struck some of the lefties on here that trying to arbitrate over what people are and are not allowed to laugh at is one reason why the working class does not want to know their like and never has?

At last - someone getting back to the topic of the thread! By your logic though, wouldn't socialists have to give up being socialists altogether, and try to pull off some impossible putsch?

Look forward to hearing Ian Dovan defending hi pro paedo-rights position to the Imams!

nah, i'm just saying revolutionary socialists should either stay out of electoral politics, or put their money where their mouths are and stop pretending to be revolutionaries.

Why does that matter?
Because he's telling posters on here who are in their 30s or 40s (or even oldr)that have been involved in the labour movement for 20 or 30 years that they've never experienced class struggle. He's pontificating about the miners strike when i bet he was barely born when it was taking place. He's making thinly veiled accusations of racism at people who are long term anti-fascists - and i want to know if he's a 20 year old student who's never been involved in full time work (apart from a summer) in his life. I want to know what he's basing his idiotic posts on. What his experience is that he can wag his finger or poke it into other posters chests and tell us just what's what.

So 20 year olds are not allowed to have opinions on the class struggle?
I've said nothing of the sort, nor do i think that. They're not advised however not to tell people who've seen more bitter struggles than they ever have that they've never experienced class struggle. And i wouldn't advise them to tell long term anti-fascists that they're really racists either. Not unless they really do want to appear as the sterotypical know it all, just left home student trot we all know and despise, no.

Matt, you've picked up a really nasty habit off RW and udo of twisting what people have said. It won't do you any favours hereor in the real world.

Did you bother reading butchers' post before replying? You certainly didn't bother to digest it.....

Having an opinion isn't an issue. Pulling rank is.
