Why should this American watch World Cup?

To watch the spectale of your former colonial masters being ignominiously dumped out of the competition by some small pacific island nation or somewhere. :D

The USA are in a very tough group with Czech Republic, Italy & Ghana. If you can get out of that group to the knock out stages you will be doing very well. Did you realise pieman that this is the fifth World Cup in a row the USA have been in. A very good record. Also football is the fastest growing sport in the USA. Its is massive in the Latino areas & states such as New Jersey. There are also some excellent players in your national side. Go on support them, you will have fun & a much better chance of getting a ticket than us.

the biggest sporting competition in the world, that's why:cool:

bigger than the olympics,

although i do love the lympics too

You might miss the chance of finding a new sporting intrest by watching the best players in the world competing...

What have you got to lose, watch a couple of games and see how you get on.

If I were you I'd try: Group E's first match: USA V's Czech Republic on the 12.06.06

should be a very good one

You'll be missing the opportunity to see your team competing in a world final that ACTUALLY is the world….

World Series Baseball…my ass!!

Lots of gamesmanship, cheating and crap refereeing decisions which will change the course of matches and lead to injustice, acrimiony, threats, violence and possibly even spark major international incidents. It's the beautiful game, but it can turn very ugly. No other sport matters to so many people like football does.

and some poor Colombian might get murdered for scoring an own-goal.

and guess who the Colombians were playing?

Is there something special going on in New Jersey that I wasn't aware of?

Or is it just that there's a fairly big Hispanic population and the 'Red Bulls' play there?

The USA actually have an outsıde chance of wınnıng thıs thıng. I thınk ıt would be funny ıf they dıd--most Amerıcans wouldn't even notıce, whıle the rest of the world would be drıven ınsane wıth frustratıon.

<nods in agreement>

i think the ingerlish would get more pissed off about a USA win than a German or Argeninian win, so i'm all about Team U-S-A at this years world soccerball kickfest

But it would put the anti-English lefties in a real quandary.

I don't think the USA have any serious chance of winning it. I do think that they will get out of their group (ahead of Italy) along with the Czechs. But probably quarters again.

Hey PIE,you will miss seeing firsthand why it is called THE WORLD GAME.Nearly every country on earth has a soccer team and if good enough can make it to the finals. It is the fastest growing sport here in Australia and has been for the past 4 years. As with Aussie rules,Rugby and League there are no helmets or shoulder pads just speed, agility, skill and heart.

the world cup is a lot more dramatic than shit like the superbowl, there's always something amazing happens. i tried to watch the superbowl once and it went on for about 5 hours

watch 2 teams get to the semis of the biggest sporting event in the world, battle to the death for 120 minutes, then go out on penalties and you'll never say '5 yard recovery' or whatever again

I'm not sure. Their country stood still when their women were taking penalties against the Chinese in 1999. I think if they got to the final, Americans would realise footballs are round :D

Yep the Superbowl is shite

Hmm has anyoen actually seen the USA play or know their players. It's true they're much improved team, but they're not even dark horse for the world cup.

They can get the odd shock result like beating Portugal in 2002 and they're very adept at beating their slightly superior, but overrated Mexican neighbours, but they lack truly world class players who are capable of winnign the World Cup.

If you look at USA's star players:

Kasey Keller: very experinced goalkeeper, currently plays in the Budasliga spent most of hsi career in England with a successful sohourn in La Liga. He had a great season in the Bundasliga this year, but you have to say even in his prime in England he was never among the top goalkeepers in the Premiership.

Landon Donovan: won the ward for best player at the U-17 WC in the late nineties and won the best young player at WC 2002. However after WC 2002 he went to Bayer Leverkusen, but was unable to forcve his way on to the first team before returning to the MLS.

Demarcus Beasley: PSV player, last season briefly rgearded as one of the hottest young prospects in European football. However that looks now to be misplaced as he has had an exceptionally poor season at PSV this year where he is no longer an automatic starter.

Brian McBride: Playss for Fulham in the Premiership, has proabbly had the season of his life this year - voted player of the year by Fulham fans. But let's remembr that the best season in a long career as a target man still only amounts to 9 Premiership goals and being voted player of the year for a mid-table Prmeirship club.

It's possible they're going to get out of their group as the much stronger Italians and Czechs have their own troubles, but winning the group seems very unlikely and a second place finish will almost inevitably mean a second round meeting with Brazil who are they no match for at all.

Off topic, but this is really annoying me - why do you miss the dots off your i's?!

Its still Yanks against Yanks innit!!! ( sorry, I forgot. To Americans The USA IS the whole world!!!)
With respect baseball is actually a very international sport, taking in virtually all of Latin America, Japan, South Korea and to a certain extent Australia. It isn't near the scale of football but then what is? Cricket has a world cup but in reality how many teams outside the Commonwealth enter? Similar for Rugby, although that reaches further. Baseball is an international sport, but I think where the impression of North America looking inward comes from the fact that all of the top quality play is centralised there, whereas with football the top players play throughout Europe (with some in South America first).

PS. I am English and a huge football fan if that makes a difference.

Umm... How can you say Rugby reaches further than cricket?

The overall cricket-watching populations must be, when you take INdia and Pakistan into account, considerably bigger than the rugby-watching ones.

In terms of population yes, but I was thinking that rugby has reached outside of the Commonwealth, to Ireland, France, Italy, Holland, Japan, Canada, etc, none of whom are known for their cricket.
