Why isn't Jerry Dammers playing on The Specials' sell-out reunion tour next month?

Given I NEVER said Golding and Staple weren't born in Jamaica i'm at a loss as to your point. 2 Tone was and is a British phenomenon, just like skinhead. Doesn't mean it's inward looking though.

Sorry, I just can't ignore the Jamaican roots of Golding and Staple, ignore the Jamaican music, along with Jamaican rudeboys, with their Jamaican fashion and refer to 2 tone, who used a Jamaican image, as a "British phenomenon".

Who's 'ignoring' it? Skinhead is a British born phenomenon, it doesn't ignore where the influences came from though, the same with 2 Tone. It's not too difficult is it? Why didn't 2Tone just 'happen' in Jamaica then? Why didn't it happen elsewhere, it's because of what was around Dammers and co, that was late 70's Britain, allied to the music he and his mates loved.

nanker said that that was what 'the people' wanted

It may well be, my reply would be but it's The Specials, not just a Madness reunion. Yeah Madness have a following but there's a whole host of reasons why this has been so long hoped for and it includes a whole host of reasons, arguably some contradictory.

...but I did expand on my original point, which you appeared to gracefully agknowledge.

I can honestly claim that I do not speak for 'the people' or any of 'The Specials', they may all want a fully expanded musical journey into the realm of folk jazz oi, but I would like soemthing approaching a good time ;)

At least two of whom came from Jamaica. :D

With that (and indeed nankers 'expansion') I'd wholly agree. Plenty of good reasons still to go and see them, and I'm sure they'll be better than just having a knee's up.

Even without the man who made it all possible.....

;)

Deffo, the two lads who run/own my newsie an asian ex skinhead and his cousin an asian ex-rudie, always end up gabbing how we hope it all gets sorted and he does play.

Though i'm pretty sure i'll end up with a few of the older skinheads I know stood at the side opr back, well-dressed and sussed, armns folded, heads nodding gently and just tapping our toes.

i couldn't bear the thought of bouncing about with a load of fat fortysomethings on their one night out a year with their poxy check ben shermans hanging over their beer bellies wearing shitty ben sherman shoes (!) they got out of the missuses catalogue an wishin it was seventy nine again before going back to the mortgage the missus an the oasis cds.

eeeeeeeuuuuuuurrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!

To give Madness their due they do have some new material...it's very good (mehtinks, speaking on behalf of meself and not the people, squire).

Still don't know what's wrong with the term knees up. :(

:D:D: There will be lots of this :D:D: Nicely painted picture!!!

...but, there are still some very smart old skins, possibly 40+ in age, but not in stone.

Jerry Dammers invented 2-tone and he wrote most of the tunes. He has got every right in the world to be pissed off.

Thought you said you won't be going?!
arf!

i've actually got a couple of nice check ben shermans but have hardly been able to wear 'em since the late nineties. they still fit, twenty odd years after i bought 'em.

but the shoes though? i hate all that mod/skinhead cash in shit. lambretta this, vespa that, fred perry the other.

no beerbelly either. ;)

Again, who said they didn't?!

It's true, you never mentioned at all that Golding and Staples were born in Jamaica, although I seem to recall you mentioning that the birthplace of 2 tone was Britain. :D

As I said earlier, I'll accept that the birthplace of the music genre '2 tone' was in England, may even go as far to say 'Britain', if put under torture, but the music influence, the fashion and some of the band were born elsewhere.

And so what? I never mentioned that the remainder of the band were born here.

2Tone is British, it was born here, like skinhead it was born here with a parent from abroad, it's still British. That's neither a good or a bad thing, but your seeming determination to say it's not is a tad interesting.

i know. and when it's done properly, it looks stunning. i saw a feller wearing nicely 'tiqued oxblood dm shoes not long ago and the colour and texture was breathtaking. proper dapper.

bet they aren't in the majority though. ;)

A tiny minority sadly, but we'll be there.
