Why isn't German domestic football very good?

Arsenal have spent a lot less than a lot of other teams. They've just had a cracking manager.

I don't doubt the ability of Wenger for a second but to say he is the only factor in their success is slightly over simplifying the financial advantages of repeated champions league qualifications. Such as being able to finance a global network of scouts, 'feeder' clubs and a huge academy for one thing. They aren't exactly getting their yoot off the streets of finsbury park are they?

But look at the dosh teams like Spuds and even Newcastle have spent. Got them nowhere.

I do think the primary factor is good management.

You can cite a few side who've splurted money unsuccesfully, but the point is that a) it did buy newcastle a couple of Champions League seasons actually and b) the money required is so far out of the league of most teams that it's inconceivable that most sides should ever even sniff the tails of the top 4. If you look at the history of the league - this was never the case, there is a regular supplies of pretenders to the crown and a shift in who wins the league at regular intervals. Of course, sides dominate periods of history, but never do a few teams occupy the top 4 spots so frequently as the sides at the top now.

Funny isn't it, how you never used to get 15million quid for finishing in the top four.... I can't believe you honestly think the men who've managed Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd and Chelsea for the last few years are all the greatest managers ever and the dominance of sides with a self perpetuating source of finance is just a coincidence...

Of course management helps and Ferguson and Wenger will go down as greats, but when you give it a little thought... Avram Grant, football genius didn't do so bad either did he? Prime factor in Chelsea doing so well I'd say...

Actually, is it 30 million you get now for the Champions league? No wonder the sponsors of it don't want Hull or Stoke or Portsmouth to get in to it!

German domestic football is far from shit. The Bundesliga is can overtake Serie A as UEFA's 3 ranked league this season, depending on how its teams fair in Europe. This'll mean the Germans having 4 champions league spots instead of the 3 they currently have.

Has there ever been a breakdown of the net expenditure by the leagues of Europe? In that I mean money spend on imports minus that received for players moving abroad. That might give an indication of the supposed standing, in that you'd be unlikely to get Bayern Munich bidding for say Gerrard or Eto'o, but and Chelsea or a Real Madrid would break banks to get a "name" like Ribery or even Toni.

It's like saying a Steve Vai record is great cos it's 'technically brilliant' - ok, yeah, except of course a Steve Vai record is boring as fuck. I am pleased with my analogy.
I'll just drop by to say analogies truthfully accusing Vai of being boring are always cool
