Why isn't German domestic football very good?

And the stadiums aren't all seater - which goes some way to explain why the average ticket prices are so much cheaper and the average attendences higher than the Prem.

4 german teams in the top 10 of highest average attendances of European clubs...

Man Utd are top interestingly;)

It has everything going for it, prices, crwods, atmosphere apart from the actual football. Wacthed a few games on Setanta last season, all sucked.

I hear that it can be tough getting a seat in German stadiums on match day as the German fans get there early in the morning and leave their towels on the seats to reserve them.

It'd be nice if a free-to-air channel in the UK bought the rights to some Bundesliga games, because I don't think I've ever seen a domestic German game. The same goes for any of the mainland European leagues. C4 and C5 were dicks for dropping the Serie A coverage, and I'd like to see stuff from there, Germany, Holland, France, Portugal, etc (I'll accept that Murdoch will always get the Spanish stuff).

I'm pretty sure ESPN showed one or two German games live last weekend - maybe Sunday.

Not free-to-air though is it? Disney are ever so slightly better than Murdoch, but that's not saying much.

Dave, cheers for that. I've been meaning to look into streaming games more.

As has been stated, it's different because it's run sensibly for the benefit of match going supporters rather than for owners' egos and the profit margins of giant media conglomerates

Wish our league was more like the German one

Bundesliga's great for fans who actually go to games...brilliant atmosphere, family friendly, cheap tickets, good beer.

I watched Hertha-Werder Bremen today, my first ever Bundesliga game, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Closer to the British style than the Italians, but without the overbearing testosterone we get in this country. This is a public thanks to Dave for clueing me up on how to do online stream. Cheers mate.

Marseilles-Bordeaux starting in 15mins.

How dare we sneer at the German League, a far superior structure in every way to tedious farce we have. Take away the corrupt, protectionist monopoly of 'the Big Four', and the 'Premier League' has no standing whatsoever. And even those foriegn owned, foriegn staffed organisations - about as English as a cafe latte - cant seem to attract the biggest players (one of the reasons we are told to put up with it), all La Liga bound. The rest of the 16 teams - bar possibly Spurs and Man City - couldnt light a candle to anyone in Europe, hence our abysmal showing in the 'Europa League'.

Disagree Man City, Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa are up there with the top German clubs in terms of quality. The poor showing in the Europa League is more to do with the fact it isn't taken that seriously. The fact that Aston Villa played a second string team this year and last year is probably why they did so poorly.

I enjoyed the Premiership in the mid-nineties more. I don'tknow whether it was actually more entertaining or whether I was more easily entertained, but the quality of the football is undeniably better these days top to bottom.

You can hold up the Bundesliga as some sort of great paragon, but from a technical aspect it is lagging far behind the Premiership.

What is a technical aspect worth when we know exactly who will be the top four teams every fucking season? It's like saying a Steve Vai record is great cos it's 'technically brilliant' - ok, yeah, except of course a Steve Vai record is boring as fuck. I am pleased with my analogy.

I'd much rather watch a competitive league than the technically exciting dross we see every year. The top 4 or 5 are virtually in place already. Even formula one, with all the naked corporate knob waving in that sport realised it had to try to even things out a bit somehow.

That said, I remember Bayern Munich winning it for about 5 seasons in a row, so it can't necessarily be that much more competitive.

Thats as maybe - but who comes second and third? - If you look at the 70s and 80s, it's liverpool winning most of the time, but what an interesting mixture of teams come second and third...

Yup, tottenham in 2nd, having not dropped a point, same as last year...

Can you deny that Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea are near the top and will be at the end of the season? Maybe, if they are very lucky Spuds will finish 4th. Wow. What a league. Best in the world. Occaisionally someone else finishes 4th. Maybe Man City might change that and make it a big 5. Then we can hope for real excitement cos one of the will have to miss out. I can't wait, no really.

German football is boring because... er... what?

Tel you what, I'd rather stand at a ground in Germany for a reasonable price than watch at pretty much any soulless over priced Premier League ground. Who cares that we pay through the nose for our football anyway. It's the best in the worldtm

A boring football ground yesterday.

Is a league won by an outsider because the best team plays like crap and it's usual rivals have gone in to decline really that much more exciting?

Don't get me wrong I see what your saying and agree in part, I just think that some are looking at the Bundesliga with rose-tinted spectacles.

My own preference is for international football (even if FIFA are doing their best to fuck up the World Cup by using it to showcase rule changes and equipment)as you still have to best players, but it's much more unpredictable

I totally agree, international football is great but I'd rather they sorted out the Premier league to be honest, instead of waiting till every other summer for some decent football.

Yes, the bundeslega is better in my view - it's not possible to conceive of our top side and usual rivals (i.e utd and the other few) being so bad that say, Villa won the league.
