why isn't everyone on the left an anarchist

if your gonna be a socialist why not be a libertarian socialist and thus an anarchist. Why would any self respecting lefty favour authoritarian structures?

Lots of different reasons. You might as well ask why all socialists don't favour the idea of a benevolent dictatorship

I really love one of the examples beloved of young enthusiastic free market types;

"If your neighbour wants to borrow your lawn mower, it makes sense to charge him an amount that you can both agree on, that is based on the amount of time he borrows it for."

 :D

Er no, you fuckwits - in the real world you say "Sure mate, here you go, I'll be out later but I'll leave the key to the shed under the gnome by the back porch if you can just stick it away when you've finished that would be great, cheers."

It's quite literally knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.

I'm assuming that the 'yes' was ironic and that you disagreed with the earlier post. Could you elaborate on what you mean here? I'm not seeing how any of these examples (apart from your family) would necessarily not operate by free exchange. For instance, how does your school's out of hours club force any of the participants to pay more than the free market rate for whatever they get out of it?

You'll need to expand on what you mean by the free market, the free market rate and free exchange. Once you've done that then you'll need to give some examples of how you see these markets, rates and excahnges operating in the different club and familial relationships.

On the other hand you could just accpet the obvious; i.e. that Stoat Boy was very wide of the mark due to employing his ideological prejudicies rather than casting an eye over the way people live their day to day lives.

True, but if you're charging him the cunt will return the mower, rather than just having it 'resting' in his shed.

Not everybody is a cunt. But a lot of people will start to behave like one if that's how they're treated. Charging for the loan of a lawn mower indeed!

I have a neat and tidy garden, with a rather nice shed. Dealing in stereotypes will only get you so far.

Me too. And I lend people my lawnmower.

And when my neighbour broke it he was mortified and got it fixed as well as insisting on bringing me a round a load of beers to make up for it.

I have a garden, but my tomatoes and peppers didn't do well this year. Perhaps I should have borrowed something from my neighbour?

Depends how you define winning and losing.

For me I tend to believe I am winning when the losers start going all grammar Nazi on me and stuff.
Even when you have to go Godwinesque to claim that you're doing so? :)
But then again if you define yourself in any way, shape or form as left wing I guess you are the experts on what losing is all about.
You just don't get it, do you, Mr. Binary?

This thread title reminds me of the singer in a band I was in. He was always dividing the audience up and getting them to do stuff. "All the women sing the chorus". "All the Chinese people clap along". "All the people on the left ... be anarchists".
