Why is Obama saying nothing re: Gaza?

You are kidding, right?
If you believe they wouldn't "do business" with the Russians, or that Russia wouldn't jump at the chance of buying some geo-strategic leverage, then you're even more far-gone than I thought.

So if Obama does decide to switch sides and put American military power behind the Palestinians, the Russians will step in as Israel's benefactors and we're back to the global armageddon option? Isn't geopolitics great!:(

I reckon it's more likely the Chinese would become Israels new owners tbh.

I think the onslaught will stop a day or two before he's sworn in?(maybe even an hour before)

I doubt they would. Anyone that sides with Israel also has to create and then prop up friendly regimes throughout the region, as well as funding the Israelis themselves. IIRC 40-50% of the US's entire aid budget is Israel-related (to Israel or one of the friendly allies).

When has Obama ever said or done anything that indicates he'll shift American policy in the Mideast any more than a smidgen to the left or right?

Yea, could be right. That's about 10 days from now. Time for Israel to do a good deal of damage to Hamas (& for Hamas to gain more prestige & the Gazans to get more sympathy from the world (including the US public), but if the fighting is winding down, even slightly, the presure on Obama to really make changes in policy & do something will be a lot less.

As I said before, his top, top priority is the US economy. That's what the US public cares about & "foreign stuff", except for Afghan, is way down on the list.

they've been caning it down there for ages. At some point the Monroe Doctrine is gonna come into play

Not sure they're in a position to square up to China really.

Is Washington losing South America to democracy?.

To sum up, the democratic movement in Latin America and the Caribbean can only be stopped by U.S. military intervention, covert or otherwise. Neo-liberal policy wonks are struggling with how to resolve this dilemma and preserve U.S. hegemony in Latin America’s affairs. The old fashion “big-stick” policy is tempting, but it carries severe repercussions in terms of U.S. international standing. In the mean time, all that the U.S. imperialist have to work with is to degrade and vilify real Latin American democracy in public, and to undermine it covertly.

Yesterday's graun front page headline was about Obama - via intermediaries - talking to Hamas.

So not 'business as usual' it seems.

I'm sure Hillary Clinton will be very keen on getting stuck into her new job tho'.

Nope - the election in the state of Israel isn't until February sometime - the 10th.

The carnage can't stop until then - would make Livni/Barak look "weak" :(

It can stop after then - and Obama can claim credit with the US people for it stopping after he's been in office just 30 days. Very good reason indeed to keep schtumm now.

It'll be impossible for Obama to keep quiet after he's sworn in tho'. I bet already made the deal. Make it easy for everyone. Also stopping a day or two before will make this "news" fade in the razamatazz of ceremony. Job done.

What do people make of this then?
...Jewish groups expressed disappointment in the Bush administration for failing to veto a U.N. Security Council resolution on the Gaza Strip war.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee issued a statement Friday expressing "its disappointment with the U.S. administration for succumbing to pressure exerted by Arab states and agreeing to bring this vote to the U.N. Security Council -- a message contrary to the steadfast and overwhelming support expressed this week by the United States Congress and dozens of elected officials from across the country." The statement came a day after the U.N. Security Council approved the resolution in a 14-0 vote...

Is this a change in US policy? The US has normally vetoed resolutions that Israel opposes. This time they just 'abstained' which allowed the resolution to pass.

This has been mentioned elsewhere, but basically the US was originally going to vote for this, but only changed it to an abstain after they were begged to do so by Olmert, personally.

It is something of a change in US policy, albeit at a time when it really doesnt matter.

It is a change. The US record on resolutions critical of Israel is something like 80:2 veto:abstain - now 80:3

Is that it? All that stuff about change, just more US politician bullshit?

He hasn't said a word. Doesn't look good.

Looks like Israel really do own the USA.

Oh well, they say the meek shall inherit the earth, so that cuts Obama out of the deal anyway...

Israel does not own the USA they just control it.

What are you doing now then?

Posting David Icke snakeoil links on another thread... hint... hint...

Not long ago a friend pointed at a shop in the Old City and said "they sell actual snake oil, you know". I'm kicking myself for deciding I'd go back later for some....

Maybe I'm just cynical about US policies whoever is in charge, lest we forget, taking the job of US prez has a pretty huge instruction manual full of nasty stuff.

Would take two weeks to read properly and at least 10 people to remind you what it said a week after that.

In any case... NO David Icke links on this thread please, ya!

;)
