why is my cat shitting on the carpet and what can I do to stop her?

Update for you - I finally took the cat to the vet as yesterday the foal was playing with some poo he found :(

As I thought, there's nothing physically wrong with her (apart from being fat but I knew that - she doesn't move). I have now got some valerian to help with her stress.

And a bill for 55 quid  Why are vets so fucking expensive?

Apparently if this doesn't work, there is a plug-in thing which emits a scent like a cat mother which calms then. Or a drug which has cat breastmilk in it  :D

Vets bills take the piss.. over £100 for Jeff's jabs.. complete joke.

We have that feliway plug-in... Jeff still attacks Beanie, and they still fight constantly, but Beanie seems a bit happier and has gone all soppy again.

Aha - feliway - that's what it's called! I wasn't sure when the vet was recommending it and no doubt they would have marked it up by 100% :hmm:

Feliway is bloody expensive though - my vet wanted 45 euro per monthly refill, so we didn't bother.

How much is that?:o I've found it for 11 quid online but that's still really pricey. Also the website doesn't say it stops cats pooing - only weeing. I might try it for a while if the valerian doesn't work.

this thread is putting me off having cats :(

I have a really lovely one going spare :D

Honestly - she's really cuddly and affectionate. She just doesn't like Elliot :(

Cats are fine. Cats + babies = not fine. I think young cats would probably be okay - I've had these two for about 14 years though so I can understand it's a bit of a shock. Then again, the other one is fine and even comes for a cuddle when I'm giving him his milk before bed. Scratchy has always been a bit of a diva though

I just got home from work to find a pile of recently shat out cat turds on the mat in the kitchen, usually the three Moggies do their business outside, but its been teaming it down with rain today so I guess that's why one of them dropped their load.
I couldnt suss out which one had shite on the mat so I threw the three of the fuckers out in the rain and shut the catflap

Cedric's been pissing in inappropriate places for the last few weeks. Took him to the vets today, and they said they couldn't do anything, so he's now gone to the great litter tray in the sky :(

Our cat got like this when she was old.

She would poo and pee all over the place and nothing we did seemed to make a difference.

Eventually she was diagnosed with kidney failure and in the end she lost all interest in anything and we had eventually to have her put to sleep.

:(

Sorry to learn that, moose.

My two boys were 16 when they eventually popped off. But trashy, they both started toileting in the house. My bubs was about 3 then, so I didnt think it was that and each time they were diagnosed with failing kidneys and old age. Boo...

He was a bit mad, they think - he'd gone completely psycho in the last few weeks, and had rotten teeth and dodgy kidneys. He was approx 18.

:( my sympathies.

What is it with cats and their kidneys?:(

If they start licking tree bark, that's a sign of kidney failure. There's a chemical in the bark (can't remember what it is, sorry - rubbish me) that helps them.

How did you find out about the kidneys? My vet's examined my cat and said she's in perfect health.

The vet felt them - they can shrink very small when there's a problem, particularly in old age. Cedric had been drinking loads of water.

If your cat's in good health, then it may just be a behavioural problem and easy to sort out. :)

Thank for the god wishes, folks.

Re vets bills. A mate of mine lived with a vet for a while and told me it was standard to charge a fee to put small animals down but what they actually did was wap their heads on the corner of the table - I assume in cases where the owner does not want to be present. There was an incident where a dead hamster was found in the pocket of a jacket he had borrowed and there was a story about setting fire to a budgie whilst trimming its beak but I cant remember the details. It wasnt the vet from Royston Vaisey. But almost.

Wow - Im glad to find this thread tbh, I've had my cat for about 10 years and he's started using the house as a toilet more and more as he's got older - I thought it was just him. Apparently not. Although he's old - 20/21 - and he currently has quite a list of problems.

The vet can feel the abdomen, the kidneys go small & hard as they fail. Confirmation comes by way of a blood test, and tablets can be got to help failing kidneys. I know, we have some. Kidney failure's on my cat's list. :(

Oh moose, sorry to hear about your Cedric :(

Trashpony, 13 is not really all that old (although all cats are different), but if the vet has checked her and says she's ok physically, she might just be jealous? One of my cats who died at seventeen became incontinent towards the end, and her sister (who is now 21) and has kidney failure has started very recently to poo in the bedroom. She's blind and can't always find her way out of the room, so I've stuck a litter tray up there for her.

I dunno what your solution is. One of my younger cats gets very jealous if i spend time with my other cats so i have to make sure that he gets lots and lots of cuddle time. But, i haven't got a young child to look after, so that's no problem for me. Hate to say it, but you may have to consider giving her up :(

That's what my mum says but I'm really reluctant. :( I don't think 13 is that old either - I've never had a cat die before it was 17.

I have tried spending loads of time with her and giving her a lot of attention but it doesn't seem to make any difference. And a cat getting up from a cuddle to go and shit on the floor makes me much crosser :o

Who's going to want a 13 year old cat? :(

I don't blame you being reluctant :( Don't know what to suggest. My experiences were purely a result of old age so i couldn't do anything. There are a few people in the office who have young children and older cats, i'll ask them if they have any experience / suggestions

Don't give her up after 13 years....! It's not an impossible situation. You see a poo, you pick it up and you give the area a scrub with detergent and the problem is solved. That's the easiest way to look at it. It's not as if she's shitting ten times a day and covering the place with poo. Cats' poos are smelly but they're not Satan.

I know this sounds silly but it works with my cat. You explain the situation to her. You just talk to her in plain, straighforward fashion and tell her why she shouldn't be doing what she's doing. Like I say, it sounds stupid but I've been astonished by what happens when I tried it with my cat.

It's slightly less easy to be forgiving when you find your baby with said poo in his hand ...

I will try talking to her though - thanks :)
