Why I hate 'Little Britain'

Chuck Wilson said:
I must say I am a bit concerned about the Workers Power line on banning Ali G and now Little Britain. Have these people got no sense of humour?

What sort of pofaced misserablism would they want in the new mass working class party that they are forming after the RMT conference?

I find it hysterically funny when an organisation that claims to represent the w/c tries to ban comedy that is loved on a massive scale by the w/c...

Of course Workers Power doesn't think Ali G or LB should be banned, he's taking the piss

That doesn't mean you can't discuss what is and isn't over the top in comedy. Even then you wouldn't ban it though, although I'm glad you don't get racist fuckers like Bernard Manning on main stream TV.

You're wasting my oxygen by breathing buddy.

Want a great example of the m/c eating itself, look not further than Bremner Bird and Fortune and the 'dinner party' skits - perfect piss takes of the supposed liberal intelligencia being utterly heartless and cruel.

Monkey Dust is another example.
yep, very good stuff esp. MD - the sketh where the family get an aga, or when they call their kid a really stupid name (like florian or summat)... Spot on.

The bit I've emboldened kind of illustrates my point about those who often shout the loudest about being offended aren't the actual tagets of the humour.
I wasn't offended, just abit embarassed for them and the asian community; i didn't think that there was half an hours material in laughing at the fact your parents came from india.

I don't really get your point, i think...

i wish i found it hysterically funny when people with pre-set views on the left assume something that is completely fucking ridiculous, but unfortunately i just find it tiresome.

CR raises some points on classism and racism in TV comedy and suddenly WP want to ban such programs? 1 + 1 = 3 ?

But why would you be embarrased for them? What reason have you to be embarrassed by this? That's my point. I'd imagine that if you'd seen Pulp Fiction with someone black you'd have been cringing in your seat when QT starts going on about 'dead nigger storage'? Fuck me, I still piss myself laughing at Essex jokes and never tire of them.

I actually find it patonising - finding something embarassing on someone else's behalf? And the PRESUMPTION that your comment '...and the asian community' shows...come on Tax you know better than that.

It is not funny and it is not good for them, don't you relise that?!

(Oh and add me to to the very long list off people whop regard Hari as a pudgy little eejit)

Sorry, but not being party to the internicine fighting that happens among all the splinter groups on the left I wasn't aware that CW was trolling and was actually referring to an actual thing happening.

Maybe I should spend more time in P&P watching you all slag each other off eh? Not as funny as LB perhaps but I'd certainly be more aware of whom belongs to whose gangs, eh?

GGM was very close to the bone, taking the piss out of indian religion, accents of that community, family relationships... fucking loads. i found it a bit embarassing in fact, that a group of aian comedians would actually want to ridicule their background so much, cos often it wasn't that funny.
GGM is about their own personal background, hell anyone can take the piss out of themselves, but LB isnt about that, its a slanted view of the w/c.

*falls off chair laughing at utter, unbelievable twattissh inverted snobbery and idiocy of post*

Are you seriously saying that because Walliams and Lucas didn't grow up with coal under their fingernails that some of their jokes can't feature w/c characters?

Tax - what you were saying about the left and my pre-existing views? You're fighting a loosing battle with this sort of comment flung out.

TV comedy is a career choice predominately for the middle classes, hence the subjects of abuse. All the working class comedians were culturally cleansed from the box by the predominately middle class media - Davidson, Manning, Chubby brown. I can only think of one working class comedian who has been allowed on TV lately the bloke who does Phoenix Nights there might be more but you get my drift. Just because you don't find Chubby Brown funny does not mean the majority of the population, which is working class, won't either.

Do you not think that the reason Davidson, Manning and Brown may no longer be on the box is merely because their type of comedy is past it's sell-by date? All comedy has a shelf life, sooner or later the viewing public have had their fill of it and want to see something new. We don't see new episodes of 'Terry and June', 'The Good Life' or' The Two Ronnies' (RIP Ronnie Barker :( ) either do we?

As for the description of Jim Davidson as 'working class', he may have working class origins, but you'd be hard pressed to find a more right-wing Thatcher-loving Tory than him now.

What, so being a hard assed thatcherite precludes one from being w/c?

Think you need to read up on who voted for her in 79 mate.

I tend to feel the same I suppose. Hence this and the one above are very rare posts on UK P&P for me! Usually there are no threads of even the remotest interest to me on this forum.

Do you think he supports w/c issues now then, cos I don't.

No I don't, but then I grew up in a county that had a w/c that embraced and made a lot of money out of Thatcherism...and then spent the lot on stone cladding and Ford Escorts ;)

That's not w/c, that's just classy.

Sorry for the huge cut n paste but the Independent takes down articles after a day. I thought this article had some good points. Didn’t agree with all of it and thought the author (Johann Hari – don’t know anything about him) is being a bit of a snob himself at times. But as said I think there are some valid points. What do people think?

So Johann Hari...

Doesn't like Little Britain
Does like bombing Iraqi men, women and children....

He sounds like a barrel of fucking laughs.

Ok, i'll be honest i wasn't embarassed on their behalf - i was just (very very slightly) embarassed. Just me. By them finding so much to laugh at about themselves.

Its seemed like a therapy exercise or something. A bit desperate.

I AM NOT PATRONISING THEM, IF I WERE SURELY I'D BE LIKE ''OH, AHA HA HA, HOW FUNNY GGM IS, WHAT CLEVER MODERN SATIRE''

most of the time i just laughed at it. Skipinda the punjabi kangaroo was great, he kept being bumraped by the lad - completely random.

In response Johan Harri's article, here's some evidence of how much w/c people hate laughing at the w/c:

Are you sure it was cold rice pudding? John Wayne Gacy did a lot of dressing up and you just can't be too careful these days. ;)

I did too. Did laugh at the Vicki Pollard dance off where she ends pinching the nipple of her competitor :D
