<considers getting a telly>

They're all appearing in various sitcoms, sketch shows and films innit?

Try Green Wing, Coupling, The Worst Week of My Life for Sarah Alexander and Doon Mckitchin (SP...apols cos I think she's hysterical)...BBC.co.uk is usually pretty good at being able top follow up, and you could try IMDB UKs TV section...

So why do people think that a lot more people find Roy Chubby Brown offensive compared to Little Britain?
cos roy chubby brown is just plain fuckng shite!

Johan is a guy and a very annoying little cunt, looks like Martin from the Simpsons, and disgustling got young journalist of the year in 2003 (or maybe 2004).

TV comedy is a career choice predominately for the middle classes, hence the subjects of abuse. All the working class comedians were culturally cleansed from the box by the predominately middle class media - Davidson, Manning, Chubby brown. I can only think of one working class comedian who has been allowed on TV lately the bloke who does Phoenix Nights there might be more but you get my drift. Just because you don't find Chubby Brown funny does not mean the majority of the population, which is working class, won't either.

You realy did miss the 2nd 'f' out of your username didn't you? Cos every time you type it just oozes out of you onto the keyboard.

Given that you can't even remember the name of 'the bloke who does phoenix nights' it hardly bodes well for your ability to contribute to the debate does it?

Try looking up 'Jonny Vegas' sometime...

do we really need some absurd workerist class reductionism when it comes to finding things funny?

I'm sorry but Davidson, Manning and Chubby Brown are staggeringly unfunny offensive halfwits. Give me a middle-class stand up who is actually good over that bunch of wankers anytime.

Why can't we have both? Snobs deserve lampooning more than the working class do anyway.

'staggeringly unfunny offensive halfwits'? Tell me a comedian who isn't that to somebody!

Edit, anyway Rednblack said it was OK back at the beginning in post # 5 and he is the yardstick by which I'd meassure such stuff.

oo-er :o you are naughty! xx

oops taking the piss out of dick emery shouldnt be allowed... ;)

i think there is an argument to be had about the portrayal of the poorer end of the working class in the media, but LB is not to blame and is not a example of it.

and yeah catherine tait's teenager is much funnier imo, and the sweary gran.

Walliams has tried to defend himself by saying: “These characters are fun. You want to spend time with them. You don’t want to despise them. You’re laughing with them, not at them.”

Catherine Tate has similar targets but let's them retain their dignity, much like Lucas let's the Gay retain his dignity - he let's the audience associate with that character not despise him. Curious. If this sort of comedy is inevitable the working class would like a go as well.

I associate with Vicky Pollard, she's like the girl on my local train as it trundled through Bristol, I don't despise her.

If this sort of comedy is inevitable at least let the working class have a pop at all those chin stroking middle class comedians that are plaguing TV comedy an claimed the funny tag for themselves.

Come on the effluent, let's have some examples of this 'cleansing of w/c comedians' from the schedules then. You are seriously lacking in recent examples of anything you've claimed so far...

Well

1) Perhaps Lucas is quite sympathetic to the the gay bloke because of his own sexual orientation?

2) I wouldn't go out of my way to watch LB, but it is funny in parts--& defintely more realistic re w/class life than East Enders is for example!

3) Maybe LB does take the piss out of the w/class more than m/class at present--but there is enough raw material there to build on. I'd love to see a few sketches on Guardianista social workers or Last Century Leftists!

Imagine a comedy where a British Asian wearing a sari, or naming their child Apu or Karim or Gita, was the joke and the punchline. It’s (rightly) unthinkable

Goodness Gracious Me? The punchline was the fact they were indian. In every joke.

[edit: thats been said]

GGM was very close to the bone, taking the piss out of indian religion, accents of that community, family relationships... fucking loads. i found it a bit embarassing in fact, that a group of aian comedians would actually want to ridicule their background so much, cos often it wasn't that funny.

Don't waste my time

You're wasting my oxygen by breathing buddy.

Want a great example of the m/c eating itself, look not further than Bremner Bird and Fortune and the 'dinner party' skits - perfect piss takes of the supposed liberal intelligencia being utterly heartless and cruel.

Monkey Dust is another example.

And you didn't even mention the 'Going for an English' sketch :D

The bit I've emboldened kind of illustrates my point about those who often shout the loudest about being offended aren't the actual tagets of the humour. Obv not getting @ you here Tax but it chimes the same tone as it were...

My Indian friends absolutely loved it.

I must say I am a bit concerned about the Workers Power line on banning Ali G and now Little Britain. Have these people got no sense of humour?

What sort of pofaced misserablism would they want in the new mass working class party that they are forming after the RMT conference?
