why dont we call brixton cheap ville! Woolworths is reborn!!!

But Elizabeth Young, a 20-something shopper who had wandered in to browse, was unconvinced. "Brixton's becoming a bit more cosmopolitan, and this is so cheap it just doesn't fit in with that," she said. "I was told by my estate agent when I bought my flat earlier this month that due to the recession, all the poor people would be moving out of Brixton by the end of 2009".

:hmm:

I went into the 99p shop on Streatham High Rd and was pleasantly surprised!!! Think I spent over £30 - bought items including a dog brush (usually cost a fiver), a pooper scooper,, detergent, oven cleaner. Had some great shit in there.

Better still, the one in Balham sell sports stuff!!!

20 something shoppers with designs on Brixton's status in the cosmopolitan rankings aside....it is a shamefully shit shop.

....but, fair play to the owners for making use of it so quickly.

I for one would like the woolworths signage and shop front to remain intact.

There's got to be some sort of preservation order on it?

What could be more cosmopolitan that a Moroccan bazaar on your high street?

all the poor people would be moving out of Brixton by the end of 2009

She is obviously stupid
Listening to an estate agent making a statement like that for one

Also where are all the 'poor' heading too then?
Kensington?

I think a food court would have been a fantastic idea.

1) Would reduce the amount of food litter on Brixton's streets
2) The drug sellers could set up stall and keep their business indoors :D
3) It could act as an extra bus stop.

Incidentally, are we Brixton Hillites ever going to get our bus shelter back?

Well, quite. But I guess to people like Elizabeth 'cosmopolitan' is a code word for their little bubble world where there is no race or class and no notable signifiers besides money. They swarm with each other in every major city in the world and so are convinced that they are 'cosmopolitan'. The problem is, everywhere they go is the same, because they make it the same.

I think she should be forced to move to Peckham :)

People are aware that this bit was added by slowjoe, aren't they? Not that Ms. Young hasn't already written herself off my xmas list this year, but she didn't go that far.

I just bought a 13.5 tog double duvet (hollow fibre) for £8 :D

Means we don't have to give one of our two duvets to guests we have over the weekend. :o

They should call it "Chic Junk" then our Elizabeth Young would be over the moon.

Errr...the shop itself is pretty useless to be honest, 99p shops are fine, but shops selling junk like this bring nothing to the high street.

Still it's a temporary thing right?
