Why Don't I Find Thrillers Thrilling?

Why not define your dislike as action films or "action thrillers" ?

which is exactly what i've just tried to establish. You're an abrasive little fucker in the mornings, no?

Thriller is just a useful term to describe a movie sometimes. Of course you don't have to like the Bourne movies, or anything else for that matter. I think that when you try to justify why you dislike certain films in terms of plots and devices it is easy to come up with contradictory statements.

people seem to be attributing to me points i haven't even made....

Why am I being abrasive ?

I''m not the one throwing around expletives after all.

Cunt ! :)

all that "unless you're right and everyone is wrong" stuff. I'm not trying to set myself up as arbiter of anything, i just obviously had a different understanding of the word thriller to the one that seems to be common currency.

And appears to include (snigger) The Killing Fields, Pan's Labyrinth and Alien. :D

I'd put the Bourne movie into action/adventure.

I think you have to practise switching your brain off before you sit down to this sort of thing dub, you have to be in the right mood for it.

Maybe it's one of those movies you have to see at a cinema as well.

a) how does one 'turn one's brain off'? That's nonsense - and nonsense too often trotted out here.
b) i was actually looking forward to it, for god's sake.

Well you're the one who said this:

I think it's maybe because thrillers are a fairly concrete set of cliches arranged in a predictable order..

Meditation
Drugs
Booze
Hitting yourself on the head with a two-by-four

... are all established methods.

Or you just relax and enjoy the film. I do sometime go into a film in a frame of mind that won't give the film a real chance. Its not deliberate, just how the wind blows that day.

there was a crucial "maybe" - i was thinking aloud, working to an understanding.
Fine. But don't attack people who attempt to understand what you're talking about.

Calling people fuckers or to fuck off is not the way to influence people and make friends. :p

i told sam to fuck off cos I always tell sam to fuck off. it's a sex game.

i called you a fucker in a fairly light-hearted manner. I certainly didn't attack anyone.

On the subject of the Bourne films (I have only seen 1 and 2, and don't remember the second very well as I think I might have dosed off), to me they seem very slick but basically uninvolving. Rather like some of those glossy US dramas - The West Wing, House, er, Six Feet Under, Studio 60 thingammy - the makers are obviously very good at putting together a product that does all the things that it should do, but doesn't really move me in any way.

The Bourne series are occasionally diverting nonsense, not the pinnacle of any genre. For an example of a good thriller I reckon there's stuff like Infernal Affairs, or the pretty much peerless North by Northwest.

Alright, I'm just a little pissed off because of stuff you said about Elvis on another thread :p
Plus it seemed you upset Reno :p

a) You say it's nonsense but then you come out with the line "I think it's maybe because thrillers are a fairly concrete set of cliches arranged in a predictable order" which sounds to me like it's not intellectually stimulating for you, no?. It is what is it, big explosions, stunts etc.

I was sitting at work weeping into my keyboard. That man ! ;)

well first as i already said, i was thinking aloud pretty much. Also, a predictable set of concrete cliches etc doesn't mean it has to be dumb, surely? cliches aren't just moronic..

you KNOW i love elvis, what have i said about him that's bad?
That whole business about Elvis being a helpless puppet again, and dissing his movies. I'm just not having it ;)

Dubversion said:
so you - and everybody else - considers The Killing Fields to be a thriller?

There are some excellent films in that list. Many of them I would not have thought of as thrillers as such, others I would have. In fact so broad a spectrum of films does the list cover it is meaningless as a genre.

Whereas this thread is about Action movies?
