why does my laptop not work?

Get into safe mode, double click My Computer>right click C:\>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check Now
Put a checkmark in both boxes, click 'start' >OK then reboot. Let it run through chkdsk and let us know what happens.

did that, but couldn't even get as far as chkdsk as it blacked out after screen listing multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT\System32 etc.

Had to switch back on after it hadn't done anything for an hour or so but I've managed to get back in in safe mode now. Shall I do chkdsk /r/f now?

So, I'm never sure with you and all your hhms.:p

Has Boris not fixed your computer yet or what?

(Had a look to see if I've got a Windows 2000 disk. It's not its Windows Minnellium. Which is almost your name - but not what you need. (So BitTorrent it.

My hmms are directed at me.

No, I think Boris has gone to lay down to let his brain recover. :o

I don't know what BitTorrent is.

I will wait 'til Boris comes back, although if he doesn't, I may have to wait 'til 2nd October

Ooh. Bit rubbish. Waiting all that time, I mean. It sounds to me like something which, if you could get hold of a Windows 2000 disk, could be automatically repaired by the install program very easily but which, without it, sounds like a lot of guesswork and trial and error. Might be worth asking around to see if anyone's got one you can borrow.

Well luckily I can still access my emails and the internet (except when Firefox keeps shutting down which it seems to be doing quite frequently at the moment).

Main problem is not being able to view pictures. Also means I don't want to risk putting my Turkey photos on machine in case it's a waste of time and I lose them.

Hopefully as well, he'll be sorting me out with more RAM as I bought myself a DVD writer thingy so I could put video clips on to disk, but I don't have enough RAM apparently.

Your photos will probably be quite safe as long as you put them on the D drive. You could also upload them to a photo site, eg Flickr, or a to a file storage site - DivShare will let you upload 5GB, free and forever (or so they say ), then download them when everything's sorted.

I take it you can't view pictures because of the low screen resolution in Safe Mode - if you right-click the desktop, click Properties and bring up the Display Settings, will it not let you increase the resolution any? Don't think it will, but worth checking.

Also, see this page on boot options, available when you press F8 on bootup. Have you tried the 'Last Known Good Configuration'? Also worth a try:

The display settings is only coming up with 16 colours. All the other options have disappeared.

Have also tried Last Known Good Configuration and that didn't work either.

I use Photobucket for my photos as I'm unable to get on to Flickr at work.

Photobucket unfortunately is incredibly slow and I've loads of pics to put up. Would also like to be able to view them and delete what I don't want. Prefer to do that on a big screen rather than camera as things look different on screen.

Will have a look at that Divshare though. Cheers

I've run a couple of virus checkers. Ran Panda first and it would only clear one virus for free.

I'd have though Nod32 would have stopped them, but obviously not. Ran Spybot after Panda and it found nothing.

I don't have a recovery disk

Will I have lost all my photos. I don't give a sod about anything else but I don't want to lose my photos
Your photos are almost certainly still on your hard disk. The only problem is that Windows is borked, we're not completely sure why yet.

You may (or may not) have a malware infection. Windows systems can fall victim to malware even if you don't visit dodgy sites, or open dodgy emails. A windows system connected to the net can be get infected by malware, even if you never touch the keyboard at all  But it may be that windows has got its knickers in a twist for some other reason.

Thing is, just 'cos the operating system is sick, does not mean that your photos have been destroyed. They are likely still there on the hard drive.

I have a C and a D drive. I save all my photos in the D drive although my holiday ones I DID copy over to C drive. Wouldn't I still lose them if they were all copied over to C drive as well?
The contents of the D drive will be unaffected if you format the C drive and reinstall windows, OK.

If I were faced with this issue, I'd boot a liveCD (probably Ubuntu, 'cos they are very easy to obtain) and use it to rescue my data, by copying it all to the D drive, and perhaps to an external storage as well. This works because a liveCD just by-passes the borked windows system, while still allowing you to read from the windows drive.

I'm not sure if it's relevant but I think Minnie has a Dell Inspiron 4000 which only has one physical hard drive. I guess it must have been partitioned into two drives. My knowledge of formatting partitions is non-existent but I thought I'd mention it just in case it affected the advice of the more knowledgeable posters.

You are correct. b/f's brother put two drives on as he initially installed Faronics Deep Freeze on the C drive to protect all the vital stuff and we were to use the D drive, but we never have it running

Not worried about the photos. They are still there at the moment, but I'm worried about losing them trying to get this problem sorted.

However, I did listen to Hi Asl and checked out the Div Share and started putting some recent pictures on there as it seems faster than Photobucket but I took hours.

I have the following numbers in Hijack this which mean nothing to me:

R0, R3, 02, 03, 04. 08, 09, 016, 018, 020 and 023 (which has a tick in the box and says "ATI Hotkey Poller - Unknown Owner)

Have you tried plugging in an external monitor ?

You may have inadvertently done Fn F4 or whatever it is on your laptop and switched the screens.

I'm using a laptop with a nearly shagged backlight and an external monitor and I think it displays stuff on its own monitor when it first starts up.
