Oh, but she asks daft questions about everything. Not so much now, mind. Not since The Ban.![]()

er, you don't have to respond to my threads if they do your head in

Get into safe mode, double click My Computer>right click C:\>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check Now
Put a checkmark in both boxes, click 'start' >OK then reboot. Let it run through chkdsk and let us know what happens.

i wouldn't say daft. It might seem obvious stuff to us but unless you are working with the bastard things day in day out, it's confusing.
.
You do realise that "If aliens invaded earth, would you be racist" and "would you like to see a picture of my duck" are not serious questions don't you?![]()
Course.

Duh.Course.

So, I'm never sure with you and all your hhms.
Has Boris not fixed your computer yet or what?
(Had a look to see if I've got a Windows 2000 disk. It's not its Windows Minnellium. Which is almost your name - but not what you need. (So BitTorrent it.)![]()
)

Why 2nd October? That's a long, long way away. Like, months.
Ooh. Bit rubbish. Waiting all that time, I mean. It sounds to me like something which, if you could get hold of a Windows 2000 disk, could be automatically repaired by the install program very easily but which, without it, sounds like a lot of guesswork and trial and error. Might be worth asking around to see if anyone's got one you can borrow.
), then download them when everything's sorted.Your photos will probably be quite safe as long as you put them on the D drive. You could also upload them to a photo site, eg Flickr, or a to a file storage site - DivShare will let you upload 5GB, free and forever (or so they say), then download them when everything's sorted.
I take it you can't view pictures because of the low screen resolution in Safe Mode - if you right-click the desktop, click Properties and bring up the Display Settings, will it not let you increase the resolution any? Don't think it will, but worth checking.
Also, see this page on boot options, available when you press F8 on bootup. Have you tried the 'Last Known Good Configuration'? Also worth a try:

Your photos are almost certainly still on your hard disk. The only problem is that Windows is borked, we're not completely sure why yet.I've run a couple of virus checkers. Ran Panda first and it would only clear one virus for free.
I'd have though Nod32 would have stopped them, but obviously not. Ran Spybot after Panda and it found nothing.
I don't have a recovery disk
Will I have lost all my photos. I don't give a sod about anything else but I don't want to lose my photos
But it may be that windows has got its knickers in a twist for some other reason. The contents of the D drive will be unaffected if you format the C drive and reinstall windows, OK.I have a C and a D drive. I save all my photos in the D drive although my holiday ones I DID copy over to C drive. Wouldn't I still lose them if they were all copied over to C drive as well?
I'm not sure if it's relevant but I think Minnie has a Dell Inspiron 4000 which only has one physical hard drive. I guess it must have been partitioned into two drives. My knowledge of formatting partitions is non-existent but I thought I'd mention it just in case it affected the advice of the more knowledgeable posters.

You may (or may not) have a malware infection. Windows systems can fall victim to malware even if you don't visit dodgy sites, or open dodgy emails. A windows system connected to the net can be get infected by malware, even if you never touch the keyboard at allBut it may be that windows has got its knickers in a twist for some other reason.
Thing is, just 'cos the operating system is sick, does not mean that your photos have been destroyed. They are likely still there on the hard drive.

If I were faced with this issue, I'd boot a liveCD (probably Ubuntu, 'cos they are very easy to obtain) and use it to rescue my data, by copying it all to the D drive, and perhaps to an external storage as well. This works because a liveCD just by-passes the borked windows system, while still allowing you to read from the windows drive.
this is probably what you've got Minnie... http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=258414&highlight=kalidarkone
I don't have AVG installed. I'm sure I took it off as I already have Nod32 and Spybot and Malwarebytes on

well done...you read the first post...now read the rest...![]()
