Why does Dalston Kingsland stink?

Firky said:
Just came from there thirty minutes ago, if that. Can't say I noticed.

Well I doubt you would unless they've managed to build it since Monday or whenever it was approved.

an 18 storey block is not really in keeping with the area. Considering Hackney spent about 80 million quid to demolish their high rise housing, I don't see how they can justify putting a monstrosity up.

Isn't the old theatre and Dalston Lane a conservation area? Supposedly Dalston theatre use to be as grand as Hackney Empire but with no proper roof, I've read that alot of the interior has fallen in.

Presumably what you call the Dalston Theatre was later called the Gaumont Cinema. If so flea pit would be a more accurate description.

I never really understand town planners taking out the interesting buildings and 90% of the time replacing them with dull straight lined modern blocks which are badly made and do nothing to improve the look of the area. But I suppose its all about money and little to do with the people who live there.

The building as shown on the blog are going to really fuck up that area. They don't suit the scale of the area. And there is a great collection of old building around there.

Really depressing stuff. :(

I used to go there (so that dates me) whilst it was still a cinema. So I can assure you my decription of it being a flea pit is correct. Did you go there whilst it was still a cinema?

No. But that isn't the point is it?

It can be renovated rather than knocked down can't it?

Considering it hasant been used as a cinema for about 45 years I have my doubts as to whether its worth renovating. What might be worth saving though is the old Kenninghall Cinema opposite Clapton Pond. It is now the notorious Palace Pavillion but with a bit of luck it will soon lose its license. I understand that the interior of the building is in a relatively good condition. It might just be possible to reinstate it as a cinema.

Well the council don't think it's worth renovating as a cinema or anything else. Or even just keeping the nice entrance bit.

Palace Pavillion = Rough (not as a building, as a club). Not sure if there is much call for small local cinema's these days anyway.

Just realised- This is a major derail- apologies.

You may well be right and that its not a viable idea. But several of us in the area are looking at the possibilty. If anything comes of it I will do a posting.

Still smarting at slur on parentage ...but

Somewhere there is a scheme to raft over the (sewer plagued) railway line and build on top of the station - presumably on the soon to be reinstalled ELLX section - maybe over the NLL

Is this related to above meanderings ,......

PS - I first knew Dalston when class 501 units ran from Broad Street - a forgotten railway if ever there was one ....hell of a lot busier nowadays ! The turn came in GLC days with the "Crosstown Linkline" - Stratford to Camden Rd diesel service in circa 1983 - 66p for a rover I recall(adjusts cardigan)

Good lord lets hope so. That place has been associated with so many shootings its unbelievable that it remains open.

The police are going through the legal procedure of applying for the licence of the Palace Pavillion to be revoked. In the meantime due to police pressure it remains closed (fingers crossed). When things become clearer im sure the Clapton Pond Action Group and the local councillors will call a second public meeting on this issue.

Weren't the clapton pond group working on a local history book? What happened about that?

it would be great to see the Pavilion back to it's days as a cinema. Do you know what's happening to the Don's Cafe building at all?

As far as I know nothing has happened about the book but I will enquire. Afraid I dont know whats going to happen to Don's Cafe. But certainly Clapton Pond area needs a greasy spoon.

Don's is on the classic cafe website. www.classiccafes.co.uk . Great building and the guy I spoke to in there (maybe Don) had worked their since he was about 9 and he must have been in his late 70s!

i'd be interested in hearing more about the clapton pond action group, barry, I live on the other side of the roundabout to the palace pavillion

Has anyone been back to DK over the weekend? I got out at the station on Friday night to catch a bus to Shoreditch. The stink was still noticeable but not nearly as bad as previous days.

When they built the Matalan (extension to the Shopping Centre) they totally trashed the drains next to the track. All last summer was particularly bad. Going up Dalston Lane over the track it stinks still, but if they don't fix it by summer it's gonna get worse again. When I took Mouse to work on the trains via that route people used to think the smell came from her :( I kept wanting to shout out "it's the drains!"

The market stinks a bit because they never bother cleaning it properly, but it's not to blame for the drain pong that is now so infamous. Dalston's the funkiest place in London.

Ken Livingstone and TFL are taking over the Silverlink franchise but unfortunately not until Novemember 2007. This franchise of course includes Dalston Kingsland on the North London Line. Livingstone is promising that all stations will be manned in the evening. Anyway good riddance to Silverlink.
