Why do you support the team that you do...

fwiw I've left the 'proper' fan thing behind mostly. I just feel sorry for people who don't get what I do out of the whole thing and mock me for something that - despite everything - has given me far more joy than any number of armchair titles

Their loss, no sense of superiority over it though

Apparently some great uncle of mine played in goal for Partick Thistle. My grandad looked out for St Mirren's results. My parents couldn't have cared less about football, but when I first saw a particular football stadium I was captivated. Going down the Aston Expressway at night and seeing the AV lights on was magical. Then I had to pass it every day on the train going to school. I still think, despite Deadly's vandalism, that Villa Park is one of the most beautiful grounds. Even though the football played there has rarely lived up to expectations in recent times, I can't quite shift the feeling of excitement every time I remember walking up towards the Holte - the ghosts of players and supporters of old are still there.

There's always Liverpool.... Same colours, well sort of, you could get one of those cojoined scarves and switch to suit!

Yes. Great idea. I did think about Liverpool this year, just cos they're so classy and they only spent £80 million. Apparently that means they're good for football or something? I don't like these clubs that just buy the title. Glory boys.

Grew up in Enfield; support Enfield. Getting to the 4th round of the FA Cup during my first season following them meant I stayed. Bloody hell, that was an amazing run.

My dad was very clear that i shouldn't follow either of the Old Firm as he despised, and was embarrassed, by the bigotry and hatred between both sides. I am a bit absolutist about the Old Firm and feel that not only Scottish football, but also Scottish society, would be much better off if both were closed down and banned. However, you might as well try and ban the moon. I have a visceral loathing for both these "institutions". Two cheeks of the same arse.

One of the things I find hilarious about this is that in some kind of bureaucratic attempt to get rid of sectarian and bigotry, by ignoring the social roots of these two social problems, people end up stereotyping and writing off hundreds of thousands of people as de facto bigots. People end up making sweeping statements/assertions that simply by supporting either of these two clubs makes you a bigot and by definition that people who support other clubs are de facto not bigots. It is laughable frankly.

I'm not actually doing that, but carry on with your self-pity. The bit in bold is a much more sweeping statement than anything I've come up with.

I am aware that my views on the old firm are a bit absolutist and totally impractical. Them disappearing won't happen, even if the blue arse cheek did so, and look like they may do so again in the near future.

I grew up in Sussex so suspect I should be a Seagulls fan but wasn't really interested in Football and no one in my family or friends had a particular affiliation.

I lived in Portsmouth for a while and there was far more enthusiasm in the local community for Pompey so, if I follow any team, it's them. Not been an easy thing to do in recent years but I'm sticking with it!

I have no self-pity, i'll leave that to you.

Plus I didn't say you, I said people, I specifically chose not to use 'you' as it would mean I was personalising it which I didn't want to do. But carry on anyway....

I was being sarcy, i'm not self-pitying any more than you are.

Who mentioned poor ickle Celtic? They rather piss me off at times, they are bang out of order a lot of times too. But in your world we can never be critical of the club, it's fans, it's board and how at times it has acted against the interests of other clubs/the league by opposing a more equitable distribution of revenue.

Btw, there's a difference between the PLC and supporters same as any other club.

I'm an arm chair Crystal Palace fan because I grew up just down the road from their ground. Can hear the crowds from the back garden. Didn't have many mates in the immediate area so never got into the habit of actually going to games. When I'm back that way now, I'm usually visiting my dad. Listen to their games and follow via internet.

My dad's not a supporter of any particular club. He said he liked Leeds in the 70's. Technically he should have been a Glasgow Rangers or Westham fan I spose. He'll watch what ever game's on Freeview now.
