Why Do People Hate America?

revol68 said:
really, im glad i've got you to reiterat the obvious. For your information im not a right winger at all, rather im a libertarian communist, who take issue with crass anti americanism because it revolves around smug liberalism rather than any sort of serious materialist analysis.

your barking up the wrong tree and more to the point i think you've bitten off more than you can chew.

You really reckon yourself don't you? What an arrogant cock you are. You must think you are superior to not only me, but to all you come into contact with.

You live in your own wee world don't you?

really, im glad i've got you to reiterat the obvious.

Oh yeah? Where?

This sums up your supreme arrogance
i think you've bitten off more than you can chew.

On the contrary my friend, it is you who has "bitten off more than he can chew". Think you're big enough, do you?

Libertarian communist, my arse. Everyone is a "wiberal" but you. Well at least I know where I stand but do you? :D

well the obvious being that culture is not produced in a vacum separate from socio politico economic structures, I mean i don't need some gobshite whose read abit of Foucault to tell me that.

and yes i am better than you. :D

You're nothing but a pompous auld wind bag who loves the sound of his own voice. As I said earlier take your brickbats and ram them up your jacksy.

Not at all. On E.100th St you will find the poorest people in the Western world. .

I would have put my money on Haiti.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. In every respect, the difference between E.100th St and E.90th St is *far* greater than that between Britain and Bulgaria. More Brits will go to Bulgaria than residents of E.90th St will go to E.100th St. *Many* more. Moreover, the people on E. 100th St are poorer than the people of Bulgaria, while the people on E.90th St are richer than the people of Britain. Furthermore, the people on E.90th are white, while the people of E.100th are black. As for culture, E.100th St or its environs were home to Grandmaster Flash and Tito Puente, while E.90th St or its environs are home to Woody Allen and Donald Trump. As for language, the people of E.100th St speak either Spanish or a dialect of English that is quite incomprehensible to those on E.90th St. Are you sure you wish to continue this argument?

So the people on 90th street don't listen to Grandmaster Flash and Tito Puente?

Where do you think the kids from 90th street go to buy their rocks?

The rich and the poor of NY or whatever city are at opposite ends of the spectrum of the same culture. They're parts of the whole. Both will know what is meant by a man in a bad wig yelling 'You're Fired!' Both can read the NY Post. Both know, or knew, who Adam Clayton Powell is. Both would probably recognize John Gotti Junior on the street.

Everything you say here--"centuries of divergent development, no shared language, barely any contact whatsoever that is not based on media...." is more true of E.90th and E.100th than of Britain and Bulgaria.

Where do you think the maids for E. 90 come from?

Top post, Johnny. Phil seems to be losing it on this one... as well as straying off the point. NY may be amazingly diverse, London too, but they are significant exceptions. In contrast there is mile after mile of bland Mid Western homogeneity

The comparison seems pretty crass, in any case- how are we supposed to be measuring difference in these cases? To claim that ""centuries of divergent development, no shared language, barely any contact whatsoever that is not based on media...." is more true of E.90th and E.100th than of Britain and Bulgaria" is just daft.
As is "a dialect of English that is quite incomprehensible to those on E.90th St"- FFS, Phil, wind your neck in! That's total bullshit and you know it.

What he's right on though is his starting point- lumping all Americans together as obese, gas guzzling bushites isn't on, either.

Blimey, this thread move on a bit. In case you're still around . . .

I don't think British culture is as ignorant or inward looking as America, I think we do it knowingly, probably because we travel more and are better served by our news service.

As for why Blair was re elected... I supose because there is no credible opposition. *sighs sadly*

I think in British culture, we tend to hold our politicans to account more than the US, even if it is mainly through the media rather than the courts. We don't seem to have that fear of seeming unpatriotic that it would seem many Americans do
See, none of this means a soggy dump to the rest of the world who we - in conjunction with out friends across the water - impose ourselves on. Why do they care how and why 'we' fell the need to distinguish ourselves - and think of ourselves as better or superior - to our allies.

This 'superior', well-travelled cliche is irrelevant to anyone other than a Brit trying to feel better about what is done in our name, decade after decade, century after century.

Plus, if you're really finding solace in the idea that 'we' do it knowingly and Americans do it in ignorance, then I have to say it's not a great claim.

Truth, I think, is that we love to feel superior to our American brothers and sisters in arms, but we ain't. As the last election proved, when push comes to shove, we - not Americans, but Brits - don't give a flying fuck for ragheads and anyone else we're invading culturally or militarily around the world; all the non-ignorant British public care about is (i) the NHS (ii) taxes, and (ii) education.

Oh, and the economy, that same economy that fuels these all important trips to Ibiza and the Costa del Sol that - that superior British thinking would have it are part of our well-travelled and informed lives. Do me a favour.

Excellent post! Only thing missing was house prices!

Don't get me started on house prices !

Actually, the whole post now reads perhaps a little more assertive than I intended. Ooops . . .

Tedious people in Britain like to work themselves up to 'hate' Americans because of their own innate and insecure need to look down on other people and lets face it looking down on countries with a mostly brown population isn't fashionable any more.

See posts in this thread and others ad nauseum.

How long did it take you to produce such an incisive analysis? Not long I'd wager. "They're jealous of our way of life"...what utter cockrot.

He seems to be saying that we're all racist - but PC stops us from showing it so we've decided to hate america instead. :D Very funny! Hope you're not serious surfcat.

Do we have "an innate and insecure need to look down on other people"? Tell us more surfcat - this is really interesting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem remotely connected to reality. Or do you know better? I'd like to hear.

Dear GOD you people are sensitive.

"I rest my case" is the obvious comment.

Freaky. Did I address you personally?

Why do you feel the need to attack ME personally?

And are you really under the impression that all Americans can be lumped together and HATED? You'll be telling me they all eat babies next.

Again - I rest my case.

It's not all bad though is it?

Let us consider the good point about the USA.

1. Iggy Pop.
2. The Mag lite.
3. The blues

erm..

there's other stuff too I'm sure :)

What case are you resting? From where I stand there is no case. RJ didn't suggest all Americans be "lumped together". Might I suggest it is you who is being sensitive?

Is that code for "I don't accept your argument" by any chance?

Do you read Ann Coulter?

I can't stand Ann Coulter.

I'm not even a Republican.

If this is your argument...

nino_savatte said:

..then I would have to say that I don't accept it. Especially since the British way of life isn't THAT much different from the American way of life (but with the addition of a lot more whining obviously).

I gave you a chance - but it is clear that you don't know what you're talking about.

I can see from the other posts you've made that you'd dearly love to believe that we hate all you Americans - it makes it all so much easier for you. Oh poor put upon America. How you suffer  .

This cry of Anti-American is a pathetic one I hear all the time, and serves only to allow you to avoid arguing the actual issues.
