Why did hip-hop become crap?

I don't think you can say hiphop's become crap at all, plenty of good music being made if you look around. UK and US, and Aussie, and everywhere else :) Mainstream's crap, always has been always will be.

So now you have the awful cocks who write bubblegum crap about nothing in particular to backing tracks full of angst filled caterwauling (Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo, Akon).

Way to pick three of the more poppy artists and think they represent hip hop. Guitar music is shite its all busted, sum41 and mcfly.

Then there are the tone deaf fuckwits endlessly rehashing the painfully original themes of guns bitches and drugs (Fiddy, Ja Rule, Nelly).
Umm you havent actually listend to a nelly track have you(wise move) i dont think he has ever mentioned a gatt or drugs. Is there an original theme anywhere that hasn't been done to death? you also have people like joel ortiz, ice cube, immortal technique who rehash these old themes in new and exciting ways.

The token UK contingent (grime/urban urrgh) is so bad it doesn't really warrant talking about.
Klashnekov! nuff said really. Although theres bare uk hip hop thats worth a listen too(and then loads of back packer bollocks)

Compare this with the 80s and 90s when you had amazing collectives, (e.g. The Fugees, Wu Tang, Pharcyde)
Fair enough the whole group/collective thing has died a bit although wu are still producing stuff. Lat one to blow was dipset and they were shite(although not as bad as pahrcyde to be fair) edit: also worth pointing out that you had the sppoks in the 90's and they were dross.
a very noticeable and interesting divide in West and East coast styles
the dirrty dirrty south has the distinctive sound at the minute. But you can still pick a west/east coast artist out fairly easily.

and themes that were actually original.
honestely when did this happen? Other then the party mc's its always been drugs, bitches, bling from day one. right from rappers delight its all been about the cars you don't drive. Even rakim, hell even bdp and wutang, and cypress hill, and epmd...........
Where did it all go wrong?
It really hasn't. You've just got too bored to look properly. hip hop still has some great artists.

Oh yeah i forgot to answer whats ruining hiphop.

I reckon ringtones being counted in the charts is ruining hip hop. Means some twat like mims can stumble accrossa great beat and make money despite not being able to write a lyric.

dave

What do you mean when did it BECOME crap?

Calm down, trev. Everyone knows you only like one song, repeated over and over and over and over again, by bands with slightly differing names and the same hair.

Oh, and apparently, struggle to read... :D

p.s. Sway is utter toilet
i dissed you b4 when you posted this.

then i heard the utter fucking shit that is his 2nd album and i'm sad to say i agree with you. there's a disgraceful 4th track where he partners up with Akon. Silver and Gold, the bwoy has let fame go to his head. throwing it away imo....:(

2nd album still has a few tuneson it that are class.

dave
that one tune has completely put me off even bothering with the rest, i thought this bwoy had some intelligence, clearly not. fucking idiot.

anyone want a free sway cd cos i don't want this misogynistic nonsense smelling up my collection?

Yeah silver and gold is toss. But sway is on akons label konvict label and this will be the song that launches him into the american mainstream.

Listen to letter to kya for a bit of balence off that album.

If your serious about leeting the album go though i will take it, i've only got it on mp3.

But the thing is there's practically *nothing* in the mainstream now that's of the calibre of the 80s and 90s. I'm not saying it was all brilliant, but the highs outweighed the lows. Of course I'm sure there is some good lesser known stuff out there and I am to a point generalizing lazily. I'm not enough of a fan to spend hours digging around in obscure internet radio stations and clubs, but my point is, if hiphop is at the same standard as it was before, I shouldn't have to.

Umm you havent actually listend to a nelly track have you(wise move) i dont think he has ever mentioned a gatt or drugs.

He really has, in quite a blatant way:

Nelly on "Batter Up":
"First chase, throw yo' people and yo' kind
Second lesson, smoke that herb and clear yo' mind"

Nelly on 'Steal the Show'.
"Watch me load up the ammo, cock it back slow
In the back door, infrared low
Tell me somethin that I don't already know
Like, which one of these closets contain cash flow
Got three little problems I just thought you should know
Peep, I'm addicted to 'yes' and I'm allergic to 'no'
I'm obsessed with dough, money makin and the hoes"

Klashnekov! nuff said really. Theres bare uk hip hop thats worth a listen too(and then loads of back packer bollocks)

I have heard and like Phi Life Cypher, Jehst, Skinnyman, Braintax. I hate grime and don't count it as hiphop. What am I missing out on? And what does 'backpacker' mean?

Other then the party mc's its always been drugs, bitches, bling from day one. right from rappers delight its all been about the cars you don't drive. Even rakim, hell even bdp and wutang, and cypress hill, and epmd...........

Back in the day gunz bitches and drugz *was* original :) Modern artists have a responsibility to develop the themes or at least present them with a new twist. Mostly, they don't.

It really hasn't. You've just got too bored to look properly. hip hop still has some great artists.

Then why is it I can come across good recent stuff from almost any other genre I like quite easily, just not hiphop? I'm not *that* lazy, I assure you.
