1. Opening a file with something other than the default application - one-off
Right click the file and choose "open with".
If the application isn't listed, you will have to browse to it - it will be somewhere like :- c:\program files\videolan\vlcplayer.exe (if you do it this way anyway, you'll get the option to tick the box "always open with")
2. make default applications permanent in Windows Explorer.
In "my computer" or "windows explorer", :-
"Tools" - "Folder Options" - "File Types" - "Change" - (browse to new application as in above option)
3. make default applications permanent in individual applications
Most individual applications will have the option in their menus to choose the file-types they handle - though certain ones - like Apple Quicktime - are for ever reminding you that they "aren't the default player for certain filetypes" and it's tempting to click on "whatever" just to shut them up ....
Ah, I know all about Part 1. It's the 2nd and 3rd parts that I know nothing about
