why can't gymnasts enter the high jump?

One on one? You're crazy.
you see them tumbling and getting dead high, i'm sure with a decent run up and a few tumbles they could clear 9 foot odd, and win the high jump, what's to stop a gymnast doing that, do you have to jump with the fosbury flop, or the stradle jump? could you tumble and somersault over?

I think there's a rule about only using one foot to take off, which would prevent certain moves.
