Why are so many people on the left so bitter?

lol - yeah, I knew what you were referring to. The allegations of "severe bruising" were almost entirely fabricated.

As far as I know, the kid had 'infiltrated' us as a mole before recently switching alegiance in public. Not that I think Martin's response was anything to defend, but it was abit smarmy arsed of him to turn up at Marxism and not expect some trouble.

First time I've read of that allegation. Any links which might provide proof, or is it just hearsay?

There were serious accusations flying around one time that someone was assaulted with a balloon once by an SWP apparatchik wasn't there? :D

I seem to remember that was more or less what the CPGB leaflet said at the time

I just read the CPGB leaflet again, and I can't see any admission on their part that this bloke was an infiltrator.

Sorry, I remain a bit skeptical about this accusation. If you'd said that he'd been an SWP member who then switched his political allegiances to the CPGB during the course of his membership of the SWP then OK, but you're suggesting something much more deceitful.

cheers

He got happily used by the CPGB. That's all. They get their shock SWP uses violence story and the swp look like hardcore revoutionists to their kiddy members.

They do tend to be more splitters on the left but the right is hardly unified.

Personally I think its because the left tend to concern themselves with more worldly matters than the right.

A simple example might be local councils. Right wing councils tend to be more concerned with running the borough and so focus on things that everybody tends to agree on such as collecting the rubbish, running the schools and so on where as those on the left tend to have wider political desires which leads to more conflicts as they try and somehow change the world.

I also think that those on the left open themselves up to more charges of hypocrisy than those on the right with many examples of which education is perhaps the most obvious.

i second that

I have no idea if this lad was "an infiltrator" or was an SWP member won over to the CPGB/Weekly Worker. I have never heard the infiltrator accusation used against him before, which makes me somewhat dubious about it at this remove.

However it isn't impossible. Such a thing is not too dishonest for the CPGB/WW. I know this because way back when I was just a young member of SWSS, and I went along to a couple of sessions of their Communist University, they asked me to become exactly such an infiltrator in the Socialist Party. Their denials that they do this have always seemed a bit laughable to me since.

Is is just the 'Left' that has so many 'bitter' people as opposed to the 'Right'? Or is politics attractive for 'bitter' people? Or perhaps angry would be a better description?

I am on the left politically. I am not bitter but that could be because I have just finished a counselling course. Any lefties need counselling pm me.

Of course anyone on the left is not bitter - it is just at this moment, it is a politically difficult time and the big left vision has not materialised. The right may be bitter that they have not privatised everything but new Labour are making a good go. NHS next?

My advice is chill out - look at the long game.

The struggle as ever continues.

I think that if you have been on the 'left' for any period of time, especially in this recent epoch (post Thatcher) you're either bitter or philosophical.:D

I personally would not call myself left wing, because of the connotations that it carries:(:hmm:

I wonder why the left are so bitter

"We want to reach out a hand of unity to all on the left who want to establish a broader, unified alternative to New Labour.

There have been several false starts and, no doubt, this colours the thinking of leading figures on the left in the labour movement. The experience of the Socialist Labour Party, the Socialist Alliance, the Scottish Socialist Party and, latterly, the split in Respect would make the most optimistic exponent of left unity reach for the nearest barge pole."

Nick wrack in Respect Paper this month.

makes you want to shit with happiness!!!

that is what I have always liked about SW, it has never taken the arguments and debates on the left too seriously. People have mistaken this for arrogance

so you never had julie waterson scream at you, and your young mates, keen to have a go at the NF in 1983, ' You leave this fucking car park you don't get back on the fucking coach and you are out of the fucking Party' ( or words to that affect )???

.. people quite righly ignored her .. so we went had a shout, and months later, following a Control Commision Enquiry (i SO do not want her and her kind in power!!!) the middle class students were suspended for a short time .. and the w/c bods were expelled never to be seen again ..

(even though i sold sw from 1977 to 1984 i never signed on the dotted line so there was fa they could do to me )

politically she may have been correct but her behaviour summed up that of leftism and leninism .. that there is ONLY one truth and those who disagree are disruptive and must be dealt with

Every claim made by an idiot. I'm more than happy to vouch for the lad to you. You and him aren't that far off politically. He sometime makes that hard to see though :D

I take he he occasionally mentions the shock horror news that some working class punters/communities have concerns about immigration and social cohesion and the effect on jobs, and other such clearly genocidally racist meanderings?!

Except that I was a bit of a Strasserite :o 25 years ago lol.
