Why Are Footballers' Shorts So Long?

Surely if shorts were shorter like in the 80's, players would be able to run faster and they would be cooler?

I noticed some of Portugal players at the end of the game against Austria were pulling their shorts up their legs like they were trying to cool down.

I suspect there's too much money in fashion for that to be a reality.

The ideal performance kit is probably some sort of lycra body suit. But good luck shifting many of them from the club shop to 40 year old lard arses.

What's Man U/Alex Ferguson got to do with this? This is the Euros, it's Summer and as I said some of the Portugal players appeared uncomfortably hot in their long shots.

There was a definite shift in the early 90s from short shorts to baggy old style ones. I think Euro 88 was the watershed for short shorts.
