Why are Evertonians so bitter?

big eejit said:
I think the relative lack of success of both teams recently contributes to the general lack of love. And maybe a lack of historical perspective on both sides. And a Liverpool manager who seems to lack the class of some of his predecessors?

but wouldn't you think that the rivalry would be more intense when they were both challenging for the top honours?

And Liverpool have won everything bar teh Premiership in recent times..

This is good, what do they play at half-time in the derby at Goodison and you accuse us of having less class?.

I think it's developed because the blues have been less successful and haven't beaten us regularly in years, their management has stoked it up to detract from their own failings.

I don't see Moyes getting personal about Liverpool. That's all down to Benitez, who has his own reasons for distracting people from his team's performance.

the manchester derby's seemed a lot more intense years ago before united started to win things, so maybe he has a point

Yep. "People's Club" was a bit much, but comments like Benitez accusing Lescott of diving, in spite of the huge evidence pointing otherwise, and the hypocritical antics of his own players, takes it to a new level of unpleasantness.

Doesn't matter about Moyes, plenty of people at your club do it.

You would think he would have attempted some small amount of diplomacy - especially after the furore caused by his 'Everton is a small club' and 'we are a top side' comments last season after Everton had taken 4 points from the derbies.

I couldn't believe it when he accused Lescott of diving - he nust have been watching a different game from everyone else.

There seems to be a sort of pattern here, though - once again this season a referee gets suspended for his decisions in a game concerning Liverpool .

To answer the question I think it's because Liverpool have done much better than Everton, for a long time. Moaning and whingeing about this an that doesn't really change anything. When Everton and Liverpool made it to Wembley together and 'Merseyside, Merseyside Merseyside' reverberated around that clapped out old stadium, and then the Manc one, it was something special

This thread came out all wrong - apols.

What I meant to say was - why have Merseyside derbies got so bitter?

Casting my memory back to the 80s and 90s, things were banterlike/friendly rivalry. That's not the case now.

There is more of an edge these days.

Just wanted to know why people think this is?
I don't think it necessarily has to do with the two clubs per se, but rather the Merseyside Derby is indicative of the more general big girls blouse hysteria surrounding the Prem circus.

I was trying to think the other day when the head-holding, can't-believe-it-this-decision-has-ruined-my-life thing began it ws only about 4 seasons ago wasn't it? That's caught on bigger than even the nose breathing pinch things did.

It's a different crowd to the 70s and 80s imo. Well, it was a crowd then, now it's an audience.

Still, nice to see shots of Everton and Liverpool fans sitting together, although it obviously doesnt happen as much as it did. Wouldnt get that at Hearts Hibs or, God forbid, Celtic Rangers:eek:
