If you are going to win anything then you have to be a 'team', and that doesn't mean players just turning up for a big game, but working together at regular training sessions, friendlies etc etc. Of course that is never going to happen, if any England manager plans a friendly, then players seem to drop with a higher mortality than the Black Death, only to recover for the next prem game...

Having said all that I didn't bother watch the game on sat, Aus vs SA & Eng vs Ken was on... can't remember the last time I watched a prem game on TV, or even MoTD, footie is being fucked over by the money men, and I'm not playing... there's stupid money in footie because advertisers see how many people watch it... if people stop watching maybe we'll get our game back...

.... I wish... :( :( :(

Getting Tony to declare for England would be hard enough ;)

fuck it - we did it for John Barnes and Michael Owen...

we can do it for Sleater and Numbers...

Spain haven't come knocking at my door - so I'm happy to be persuaded by the three lions.

I've turned down Rep of Ireland (Jack Charlton asked me during a bout of extreme heat) in the hope that England will call. and the longer i wait, the more sticky toffee puddings and guinness i will guzzle

I'd love to play for England - I'd write a fucking book about it too.

It would be called - free lines....

The poll should be multiple choice

I agree.

I couldn't see the game on Saturday because I was at a band rehearsal, but the highlights that I have seen showed that England enjoyed most of the chances, but their finishing was poor and they failed to dominate against an enthusiastic, yet essentially limited Israel side.

There are reports that Rooney and MacLaren had an argument after the game ....

I agree with what a lot of others have said about tactics. Carragher is a first class defender but offers nothing in terms of attacking play. Phil Neville is the same, except he's a pretty mediocre defender as well. Yes, I would say this because I'm a Villa fan, but leaving Barry out with the paucity of left-sided players that we had was a scandal. The formation was utterly unambitious. It is a desperate situation if we are going to Israel with a formation for nothing better than a draw.

I do think that there is an attitude problem from the England players. Lampard may puff his chest out whenever he's taken to task about it, but his first love is clearly Chelski and England comes some way down his list. For two years now, he has been playing as if he really can't be bothered. But primarily, the problem lies with MacLaren who lacks tactical nous and isn't up to the job.

Unlike many others on this thread, I do give a shit about England. I want to see my national team doing well, not because I think it has a divine right to success but because I want it to win things. But without some sort of radical shake-up, we're going nowhere fast. We'll beat Andorra comfortably, but that isn't going to prove anything.

How do you define a player of international class?

Is it somebody who turns in consistantly class performances at international level?

If so then England have nobody who does this. That is why they are so rubbish.

Chicken or egg situation - premiership teams have a high number of non-English players, which is suggested as a reason for the poor England team performance. But if the England team do perform badly as a group of Englishman in one group, then why would Premiership teams want to choose just English players?

Graham Taylor Syndrome.

The manager did well at a mediocre top flight club so obviously he must have the makings of a great international manager.

Greece have won more competitions than England in the last 40 fucking years.

Our record sucks.

Bring back the home nations!

McLaren was never the right choice for manager, I don't think there's much doubt about that. Too close to Sven and not even a particularly good record with Middlesbrough. Is he up to the job? I'd be surprised, so probably not.

For me the biggest problem lies with the state of English football though.

Awash with money, players who (understandably) must believe themselves to be the best of the best; media obsession with results and the sacking / hiring of the manager, Beckham etc... it all feels very unhealthy to me. I think that produces players with the wrong mentalities: they're already 'the best' and so can't produce that total motivation needed to win tough games.

Then there's the changing society in which we live, where football is no longer the working-class lad's way out of the factories and all boys under the age of 16 played with a burst ball in the streets till duskfall...

I didn't even bother to watch this one. It had nil nil written all over it. Will be a miracle if we qualify now. Croatia and Russia for the finals. Wonder who the next manager will be. Wonder if Mourinho would fancy it. :D

1. Overhyped by the press.
2. Premiership football and international football are so different. It always makes me laugh when I hear pundits saying England have to impose a quick Premiership-style tempo on the match. You can impose a SLOW tempo on a match but against any half-decent opposition you can't make them play a fast game just to suit you.
3. Money. Playing for England can earn you a fucking fortune. Can you really engender a good team spirit in such a cut-throat atmosphere?

They are ranked 10th of 205 by FIFA so I guess they are doing okay....

They could be 9 places better but also 195 places worse

Umm.... so are you the person who actually takes notice of the FIFA rankings.... I had heard a rumour there was some-one... :D

Martin O'Neill should be England manager, he did wonders for Leicester when he was in charge of them. In all honesty though, who'd want the job and the relentless media attention and / or pounding every time the team turns in a lackluster performance or you're seen around town with a girl you're not married to?

I think Martin O'Neill would. I heard him interviewed on Radio 5 just before Maclaren got the job.

MO'N was asked if he wanted the job - he said Brian Clough ("the biggest ego I've ever known") said to him (MO'N) that he would have walked to London to get the job if necessary. MO'N said if Cloughie thought the job was that good who was he to disagree
