Why are books still issued first in hardback?

I agree but I think that's what they're doing. My friend who is a successful author used to get her books published in hardback first but now they get published first in trade size, then ordinary paperback size (b format I think it's called).

Even more benefits to the publishers - a higher price but much cheaper to produce than a hardback :(

If it's the person I'm thinking of, that doesn't surprise me. People don't generally buy mass-market fiction in hardback, but they would buy a trade paperback, usually at the airport.

Hardback still makes sense for some things - cookery books for example. And heavyweight biographies/memoirs/history books etc, that you want to keep for a long time. And they're now much cheaper on Amazon - when was the last time you paid full price for a book?
