Why all the hype about the Wire?

How anyone can say that the dialougue in The Wire is 'unrealisitic' when it was written by someone with 2 decades worth of crime reporting experience in Baltimore, and is highly regarded by everyone from the police to those street dealers who've watched it as being about as close to real as it gets, the views of Mr Idaho could reasonably be argued to be way off point on this one, sorry mate.

And 24 and Prison break aren't even on the same planet as The Wire when it comes to writing. Not much is. I'm currently re-viewing S1 and even knowing what's to come doesn't detract from the experience.

anyone know when series 5 comes out? i dont dare look on wikioedia or an official site or anything in case it has spoilers.

I want series 5 almost as much as i want to see series 6 of 24!

It's in production, and focus will move to the media, and how it affects the drugs war.

Season 3 arrived this morning

(along with S1 of BSGalactica & Life on Mars - arghh!, which one to savour first)

You need to watch the miniseries of BSG first if you havent seen it.

Slight derail - sorry:
Is the 1st episode of BSG S1 "33" the pilot, or is there a seperate pilot I need to see?

No, that one is well into the story. There is a seperate 3 hour mini series that acts as the pilot. It's really stupid that they didn't do the same thing as in the US and include the mini-series with the season 1 box set.

Downloaded series one, rather excited about viewing it I must say. Going to have to go some to beat Deadwood, mind.

Watched it all now.

It did. Into a cocked hat.

Truly astonishing TV.

No doubt.

At least I can view this page of the thread without someone telling me what happens down the road . . . .

My view from mid way through series 2 is that I've never seen anything on tv of this standard before. I'm tempted to say it makes The Godfather series of films look like Neighbours, but lets see how it unfolds.

So far it’s been . . . symphonic.

Fwiw, I suspect either it would have driven me nuts or I wouldn’t have appreciated the work as much as I do had I watched it week-by-week over the recent years. This DVD malarkey seems very well suited to quality tv programming.

Oooh, you have treats ahead :) S2 really does scale epic heights.

I'm trying to hold back on starting S3 - it's in the front room, tempting me every evening...

You can tell they're trying to find their feet with the external 'themes' in series two, it contains characters you just couldn't care less about, which is rare, you vaguely feel for nick but frank and ziggy, who gives a fuck.

Think they dropped a bollock with the greek as well.

I couldn't disagree more with this. I came to care very deeply about all of them, even Ziggy! Frank Sobotka is a classic flawed hero IMO.

Hmmm, it's an interesting one, this. For about the first half of S2 I felt a bit dislocated and even (whisper it) uninterested by the ziggy/frank/docks storyline. Until the script and plotting suddenly went WHAMMO and I began to see just a bit how ***it was all interrelated and tied together in the end***... without spoiling it for people who are still in s2, the same Wire rules apply: it's all about the power games ... crap always rolls downhill, whatever your world... and you need to PAY ATTENTION because you will be seeing many of these folks again in, uh, unexpected contexts in s3 and 4..

The acting is utterly brilliant and the final 2 episodes of series 2 are some of the most breathtaking cliffhangers even filmed imho.

*miserable but rubbing hands in glee in anticipation of s5 ... given how this lot know how to work multiple plotlines, just CAN.NOT.WAIT to see how they are going to tie it all up*

The Wire: Finest Television Ever Made (TM).

<Spoilertastic>

The idea was good, I particularly liked the parts where he was asking the black guys to give him another term but it was just too obvious an implementation of the whole idea of show, 'good people do bad things.' When he died nothing was really lost.

Ziggy was a good character (particularly with the chicken(?)) but he was just on the take for the sake of it, the only time I felt for him was the shooting.

I do remember seeing an election poster with Frank on in season four I think, that was a nice touch.

They should totally bring the greek back though.

Haven't seen season 4 yet, bu t I noticed the elsction poster in last episode or so of season 3. Made me smile for some reason.

Possible Season 3 SPOILER coming up!!!!!!

When Brother Mazoune's minder was going round the gay bars looking for Omar, was that Rawles we see as the minder leaves one of the bars. Have checked twice and I'm positive that it is, but it's such a brief shot it's hard to tell.

Genghis Cohen you div - edit that out - not everyone's seen S2 yet - this is not a spoiler thread!

Yeah, I'll be telling everyone who shot J.R next, heartless cunt that I am.

Ah yeah, you're right, is it in the end montagey bit ?

Lent out all my dvd's of it, for some reason.

Fo sho, Omar be hearin' and thinkin this .
Indeed.

Plus, Sabotka is a bit...well, sweaty, isn't he? I dunno...S2 does offer an interesting ethnic switch away from a predominantly black cast/projects related stuff to the Irish/Polish populations...all equally fucked of course...
