Who's the worst Sci Fi/Fantasy author?

The worst properly published sf novel is a toss up between Mammoth by Stephen Baxter, and Misspent Youth by Peter Hamilton. I wouldn't count either as a contender for worst writer though. The worst known sf ever written is The Eye Of Argon by Jim Theis. Since this is the only science fiction he ever wrote that makes him very much the front runner for the title.

This was published?

Gives me hope, that does.

TBH, of the two books which I'm nearly finished, one has three different concurrent stories, adn tbh one of the three is really bog standard sword and sorcery, BUT I think the way it intertwines with the other two (one about a bloke teaching in China, the other kind of hitch hikers guide style comedy scifi) and the huge battle in Victoria Park and around Hackney which it concludes with ought to make it better than stuff like that.

:hmm:

Nah................i own quite a few of them too !

:)

glad i'm not the only one.

I picked up a few boxes of crappy fantasy a few years ago in a charity shop, they sold me thyem for something like 20 for the lot. there was enough i knew would be good, but the stuff that wasn't good was astoundingly bad.

Jerry pournelle is pretty shit. something about aliens kidnapping soldiers from a cia black op to go harvest drugs, some of larry niven's sutff isn't anywhere near good either. they wrote one good book each, the same book.

robert asprin, nuff said if you've ever read it.

Larry Niven wrote cracking short stories, but he didn't know how to put together a coherent novel. I tend to get completely lost about 2/3 of the way through any of them, as the characters make brilliant deductive leaps that go way over my head.

David Eddings.

I loved his stuff when I was about 8 or 9.

Went back recently and realised just how shockingly bad it is.

His dialogue is particularly scrotum-shrinking and it does gall that it took me this long to realise that he has in fact written exactly the same story, with exactly the same characters some 3 or 4 times, spread across fuck knows how many volumes and tried to pass it off as a different "epic" each time.

Absolute bilge.
