Blue Oyster Cult invented heavy metal so would have to be a contender but in their absence its Sabbath or AC/DC (Bon Scott version)

I go with AC/DC because of "If you want blood..." the single most metal album ever. I saw them at Hammy Odeon just after that came out and I have never seen a better gig.

Sabbath and then Napalm Death and onto Metallica when i'd lightened up...it's a Birmingham thing.

Out in the streets
The dogs are on the run
The cats are all in heart
Out in the streets
Snakes are all around you
Dirty rats are on their way
They control you and they'll make you play

Out in the night
Glaring eyes in darkness
Tigers wanna fight
Out in the night
Spiders all around you
Spinning webs and make you pray
Tie you up and you can't get away

Bad boys running wild
If you don't play along with their games
Bad boys running wild
And you better get out of their way

Out in the streets
The dogs are on the run
The cats are all in heat
Out in the night
Spiders all around you
Spinning webs and make you pray
Tie you up and you can't get away

Bad boys running wild
If you don't play along with their games
Bad boys running wild
And you better get out of their way

Egyptian themed metal? You need to call the boys from Nile

"Nile's music is mostly written by founding member and guitarist Karl Sanders. It combines traditional death metal with elements of Middle Eastern music, incorporating traditional Egyptian instruments into some of the songs. Nile's music is also characterized by its extreme complexity and speed, for which the band has received acknowledgement from many music fans and journalists.

The lyrical content is based on Karl Sanders' interest in Egyptology. Lengthy sleeve notes are included with the albums Black Seeds of Vengeance, Annihilation of the Wicked and In Their Darkened Shrines albums, explaining the inspiration or source for the lyrics of each song. Also, some of the songs are based on the fictional work of H. P. Lovecraft, an author who has inspired many bands from various genres.

Karl Sanders has also released one solo album called Saurian Meditation featuring current and former members of Nile and David Vincent of Morbid Angel/Genitortures fame. The music combines elements of oriental, middle eastern, trance, and dark ambient themes using many egyptian and other non-traditional instruments."

Or how about Strapping Young Lad - Makers of one of the heaviest albums ever!

"In the same spirit as Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails, Strapping Young Lad (SYL) began as solo project by Canadian musician, Devin Townsend. Once he had completed his work as vocalist on Steve Vai's Sex and Religion and that albums subsequent tour, he recorded the majority of the instruments (except drums) on the debut album, Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing.

Rather than remain a solo project, additional members and the release of their album City saw SYL secure their line-up permanently. City was released to a huge response, prompting Kerrang! magazine to call it one of the heaviest albums ever.

After recording several very successful solo albums, the Devin Townsend band was formed who, when touring, played SYL songs as well as songs from Devin's solo projects."

surely exploding drummers make them the most metallic/metallish

Spinal Tap ARE Saxon. (or at least were based on Saxon)

Of the bands givem, Iron Maiden, but just about every metal band I liked as a metaller (no girl bands!) seems to have been left off the list. :(

First metal band I ever saw was Therapy? at the Glasgow Garage. Still the most fun metal gig I've ever been at. Troublegum was the shiznat.

'Tis true- Therapy live were so much better than on record, hearing bootlegs of Potato Junkie brings the memories flooding back  :)

Still no votes for the Scorpains I notice, nice to see the two leaders are metal bands at least ;)

True apparently means frizzy perms and unintelligible shouting by men in school blazers so, no, you're right. I'd only follow it to stop them getting behind me.

And Therapy? never sounded anything like as good without a live crowd. Even when they got fans up to play their was substantial riffage taking place.

The bass player certainly was, playing one handed with the other pointed in the air. There are several other influences for Tap, the album cover for "Smell the Glove" was based on Whitesnake's "Lovehunter", Nigel Tufnell is a joke on Eric Clapton's name (Clapton Pond/Tufnell Park), the guitarist using a violin to play his electric guitar is definitely a piss take of Jimmy Page using a violin bow and the size of the stone henge stage set a piss take of Sabbath who once had a replica of henge (complete with dwarf) so big that they couldn't fit it all on stage at once. :D

It was tough having to choose between Black Sabbath & Metallica, however Metallica got my vote in the end. Master of Puppets would have to be my fav metal album.

Confused as to why G'n'R & AC/DC are options on the poll. Hard rock sure but metal?

Where's Def Leppard on this so-called poll? :p

Sabbath first, then AC/DC and Motorhead neck and neck, followed by Judas Priest is wot I reckon.

And then Bad News. :)

But they're not REAL, they're FALSE.

they have two albums and have toured IRL (I think)

this is a hard oe to do.

are we talking all out balls to the wall (note the nice accept bit I chucked in there?) "screamin eagle deathmetal so loud your ears bleed" metal or the "wheels of steelesque" biker metal or just who had the biggest balls of them all method?

so I am going to abstain... but i fought the law... and the law won

Girlschool? Heart? Vixen? Warlock? Skin? L7? Pat Benatar?

Or do you mean bands that girls like?

You want to be their Cherry Pie you do :p

Christ there are some laughable views on this thread. Led Zeppelin "prog"? For fuck's fucking useless sake.

It's obviously Motorhead, despite being crap since 1984. Lemmy alone is more metal than anyone ever, and was, and shall always be. Roadie for Hendrix, space cadet for Hawkwind... all before the pissant nu-metallers had filled a nappy. Fucking pedigree that is.

I think Venom deserve a mention for originating the black/death metal genre too.
