Whos sick of hearing about the '66 World Cup?

William I wish you would stop trying to reason with them. The stupid cunts could turn the commentators off if they wanted. easy to avoid 66/Hand of God boretalk if you really want to.

Well reasoning with them to be met with nothing but yet another stupid ABE response, just makes said ABE look worse, so I don't care ... :p

hansen. famously english.

leonardo. english as the day is long.

desailly. an illustrious career at centre half for england.

martin o'neill. might as well be called john bull.

mick mcarthy. is actually irish but played for and managed the english side.

gordon strachan. need I say more?

:D :p :D

As an Englishman living in Scotland I am quite embarassed by the way the England team are reported. I'm not a big footie fan but would be pleased if England did well. I can understand, however, why some in Scotland get pissed off. Does the coverage have to be that over the top? I've seen all kinds of rubbish written about 1966 including its supposed political effects. Time to give it a rest I would say.

I agree with your general point (show more a much more varied range of old games) but actually, I'm really not aware of TV showing snips from the 1966 World Cup, that often. At least not recently, and certainly not on the BBC's main coverage.

(posting now cos I can't get to the Brazil game til after the second half has started!! I'm avoiding the thread too .,.. )

ITV are doing the whole 'how we won it' kinda thing as far as I am aware, I switched over to watch the telly tubbies, its more interesting.

The world cup archives are huge, all those great games and great players that I'd love to be reminded of and rarely get a chance to see. But no, they play the one world cup event that i've seen played so often its worn a furrow in my skull.

Eurosport has a programme where they show highlights of previous world cups - a couple of years every day. You should take a look - they did the year with Maradona's 'hand of god' today.

What I don't get is what is supposed to be magic about this '40 years' thing. Why keep mentioning it at all? I only remember the 1966 game because it was the first football match I ever watched the whole way through - my brother insisted.

How often do you get to see the skills that made Johan Cryuff world famous.

.

Well, since we're talking about World Cup winners, not often. Coz, great as they are/were, the Netherlands have never won it. :(

Nice clip, Drew. But, as our embittered celtic neighbours will probably remind you, that goal was scored by the then Scottish footballer of the year! :)

OH, OK, I'm with you on ITV being much worse, but except when I have to, I stick to the BBC anyway. When a match is on ITV I'll watch the match itself with the minimum bit of Gullit/Sam etc. chat at either end and half time, but will avoid any extra padding as far as possible ...

And Tyldesley's a twat ...
