Whos sick of hearing about the '66 World Cup?

I agree. It is a total fucking embarassment.

The only thing that bothers me about England winning the world cup again, is the outpouring of puerile arrogance and up its own chuff myopia that it will undoubtedly trigger.

So you don't like nostalgia for a long ago victory; you don't welcome the response you anticipate were they to win it again? The phrase "damned if you do, damned if you don't" springs to mind.

I'm proud of my home nations ahievements in the most prestigious sporting competition on this planet.

Only a handful of teams out of the hundreds that enter every four years have ever won it. I'm immensely proud of my country's victory in one of the greatest ever cup finals.

If I was from a minnow nation like some of the knockers here, I'd feel embarrased tht my fellow countrymen take more stasifaction in venting their jealousies than getting behind their own team and help them try to actually qualify for the finals one dai.

So your nostalgia comes with a cut off date? "Yester year" is fine by you as long, or so it seems, as it wasn't filmed in black and white?

Maradona, 20 years ago = OK.

Cruyff, 32 years ago = OK

But 40 years ago = "irritating"

Why?

I do see your points about Maradona and Cruyff :o

But on 1966 I'm with the OP on this, really - - it can get overinsistent in parts of the media, and over often repeated/rubbed in, hence counterproductive. And it's of ZERO relevance to our World Cup prospects (or lack of 'em!! ) NOW.

Read what I wrote again dipshit.

"The only things that bothers me about them winning it again..."

I'll leave you to join up the dots on what the word "only" meant in that context. If you want to start a row with me for the sake of it, pick a better target.

40 years sounds like a long time but in a competition that is held only every 4 years, that is only 10 competitions.

That really doesn't sound that bad does it? When you consider it has something like four bazillion teams in it now :p

So we beat the entire world at football once in ten competitions. Hardly a resounding success, but hardly a complete failure either unless you seem to think we should beat the rest of the world, which I don't really see.

When you consider something like 2 or 3 teams have managed to win it 80% of the time in those 10 competitions it becomes even less of a disappointment.

yeah 1 out of 10 ain't a great ratio, but it ain't an easy competition, which is why it matters so much when you win it.

Still, some other major football nations, principally Spain, have underachieved in an even more remarkable manner than England. Never even made one semi final IIRC.

did you mean to post this in a thread about england fans not shutting up for 40 years?

and that was 40 years ago,can you imagine the total hype if they won it again..?..
well thats besides the point really cause they have no chance....
thank fuck

If England don't win this world cup they probably have no chance unless they get to host the competition in 2018, which is the next time it'll probably be held in europe. By then we'll be talking about 52 years of hurt!

I make that would be 48 YoH, not 52. How can the years 1967-1970 be considered 'years of hurt' when we were reigning champs? The hurt didn't start in 1966. It started in 1970!

This is something that bothered me about the song immensely, but no-one else seemed to notice. In '96 we were on 26 YoH.

We are now on 36 YoH.

:(

Oh dear! Rearrange the following words into a well-known expression:-

their toys..... Somebody's thrown....... the pram....... out of.

I'd love them to win it, about time the youngsters had their own heroes.

Fucking 60's in general.. best times, can't remember them, left your back door open, Jimmy Greaves drank im my local, LSD was stronger, music was better, sex was HIV free, never had it so good, Britain was cool, British music took on the world. Krays god bless them.

Fuck them all, and all the bastards on here who are English and don't want their team to win.

Be happy for your fellow countrymen.

Up the English !

the problem is that the BBC is based in ENGLAND, so when the world cup is shown on TV viewers in every other part of britain are forced to listen to the crap coming out of the mouths of motson, linekar and the sorts, constantly rubbing it in about 66 and how wonderful they think england are and believe me,this really pisses everyone off no ends
I actually think this is the root of all the bullshit..
jimmy hill set the ball rolling when he called david nareys amazing strike against brazil in 74 " a toe poke"

...and anyway i think the majority of english hooligans are safely behind bars (not the aloholic ones) so maybe its time to bring back the home internationals.

sweet baby jesus and the orphans

I noticed before the Ecuador match at the weekend, someone was interviewing Alan Ball and they kept bringing up the '66 WC.
Alan was trying to talk about playing Brazil in 1970, but still the interviewer went back to talking about '66.

May be my imagination, but I thought it looked like Alan Ball wanted to get away from talking about 1966, and wanted to talk about another experience. He seemd a bit irritated.

1966 was a great achievement, but now lies long in the past and needs to be laid to rest.

Yeah been loads of praise for England at this World Cup by Lineker and co from what I've seen. Are people suppose to care it wind up a few people north and west of our borders? Turn the commentators off(which you can do with a flick of a button) and you won't have this problem again. You won't though will you.

It was the same for the Rep of Ireland last time around particularly with Andy Townsend on ITV or was that different?
